NINE KILLED AS VIOLENCE TOLL ON LABOR DAY Two Slayings and Like Number of Suicides in Indiana. Nine violent deaths were recorded in Indiana as the toll on Labor day. Two slayings and two suicides accounted for four of the fatalities. Capt. Ira H. Van Cleave, I. N. G., was killed at Salem when struck by a wheel thrown from a racing automobile. James Kindley, 30, shot and killed his father, Joseph Kindley, 56; seriously wounded his brother, William, 31, and committed suicide at the family home, eight miles north of Newcastle. James was operating a washing machine when his brother asked if he was going to wash his shirt. He declined, and the brothers engaged in a fatal argument in which the father tried to assume the role of peacemaker. Theodosia, 14, sister and daughter of the tragedy principals, was the only witness. Both brothers saw overseas service during the World War.
The brothers had quarreled previously, James having taken his dog and gone to live in the hills near the farm home. He came to the house Monday to do his washing. William, a physician, is head of the Chrysler Motor Corporation’s hospital at its plant in Muncie. James was a medical student. War Veteran Kills Self Harry R. Street, 35, World War veteran, committed suicide by shooting at the home of his father, William H. Street, eight miles southwest of Marion. He was gassed while serving overseas and had since been in poor health. The father, a mute, was led to the son’s body by the family dog. Wesley Cooksey, 39, Negro, was slain by police at Evansville after he wounded sixteen-* persons by shooting. Cooksey, at one time in a hospital for the insane, ran amuck after threatening to kill his wife, lie barricaded himself in his h6me after wounding seven policemen who tried to enter. Tear gas bombs were used by police in an effort to force Cooksey into the open. Fire started in the house and police dragged out Cooksey’s bullet ridden body. He died a few minutes after being taken to a hospital. Os those wounded only two are in a serious

Feel Stiff and Achy? To Be Well the Kidneys Must Thoroughly Eliminate Waste Poisons From the Blood TO feel constantly lame and achy is often indication of improper elimination. The kidneys are the blood filters, and rid the blood of waste impurities. Slpggish action, however, does not thoroughly cleanse the blood of poisonous waste and is apt to make one languid, tired and achy, with dull headaches, dizziness and often a nagging backache, A common warning of imperfect kidney action is scanty or painful excretions. Assist the kidneys at such times with a stimulant diuretic. Since 1885 Doan’s Pills have been winning friends the country over. _Ask your neighbor! New Jersey St., and Clayboy Suits, 19, Tipton, his brother-in-law, were killed when a car driven by Drake overturned in a road near Eaton, Ohio. Drake’s wife and Mr. and Mrs. U. G. WEARY OF ‘DOG COLLAR’ Pastor Revolts at ‘Monstrosity’ Around His Neck. fly United Prcttn LONDON, Sept. 6.—At least one London divine is tired to the point of distraction with the clergyman's “dog collar.” “Never again,” said the Rev. A. Cuming of Adlestone, Surrey, recently, will I go about in a state of asphyxiation with that monstrosity, the ‘dog collar,’ around my neck. I put it on only on Sundays for the services and off it comes the instant I get to the vicarage.” This outbreak against the stereotyped dress of the clergy is so unusual that it has caused amazement on the part of the more conservative element of the church.
KERN PROTESTS HEAVY GAIN IN SCHOOLBUDGET Criticism Made of Increase for Teaching Forces: Bids Opened. . Criticism of $389,000 increase in the instruction department budget for the ensuing year was expressed at the school board meeting today by Commissioner Charles W. Kern. “The reason the budget committee 1 refused to cut out anything in the building program blidget until the instruction department reduced its budget is that oven with the building program entirely eliminated the levy would still be above sl,” Kern said. He added that he felt decreases in salaries at high schools transferring Negro pupils to the new Crispus Attucks High School should be shown instead of increases. Need More Teachers Theodore F. Vor.negut, board president, suggested that perhaps the State tax board could find the reason for increased educational department budget. * That the increase is due principally to additional teachers and not to salary increases was the explanation offered by Ure M. Frazier, business director. “Taking a few pupils from each of the various classes, practically all of which were overcrowded,” Frazer said, "does not reduce the number of classes nor the number of teachers necessary in these high schools, while additional teachers are necessary In the two new high schools, Ciispus Attucks and Washington.” Minor Bids Opened Kern remarked that whereas Arsenal Technical High School will transfer approximately 400 pupils to the two other new buildings, the budget for the school is $50,000 higher. several contracts were awarded contracts for retiring heating and ventilation at old School No. 70 on a.bid of $12,805, with an additional contract to install new thermostats at Arsenal Technical High School at a cost of $l,lOO. Contracts Are Awarded Several manual training department lumber contracts were awarded, Frank Paxton Lumber Company of St. Louis receiving a contract amounting to $7,893.28, and Home Lumber and Supply Company a contract for $1,878.81. Felt and Tarrant Company was awarded contract to supply seven comptometers at Arsenal Technical and five to Manual Training High School at a cost of $229.50 each.
