Feature Tilt Saturday at Pennsy Park Illinois Central, First Baptist Clash—Power, Dairies at Riverside. What appears to possess all the marks of a real old-time baseball game is the scheduled First BaptistIllinois Central contest to be played at Pennsy Park Saturday afternoon for the city Class A championship and the right ,to represent Indianapolis this month In the national amateur tournament at Detroit. The Baptists, representing the Cooperative League, reached the final round by* downing Omar Baking of the Central League and Rockwood Manufacturing of the Manufacturers’ League. Illinois Central, representing the Big Six League, defeated the St. John’s Evangelical team of the Sunday School circuit. One of the features of Saturday’s tilt Is expected to be the pitching duel between Wally Hurt of the Railroaders, noted no-hit, no-run artist, and Russ Paugh, star Indiana University hurler. Hurt this year has turned in two no-hit, no-run victories, one over St. John’s in the Class A elimination series. Officials of the locj.l amateur baseball association stated l oday that a large crowd was necessary to help defray the expenses of sending the winning aggregation to the national tourney. Admission to the game will be 25 cents. Routes to Pennsy Park are by auto out Southeastern Ave. to Hamilton Ave., or by E. Washington St. car to State Ave. Indianapolis Power and Light and Capitol Dairies will clash at Riverside No. 3 Saturday at 3 p. m. in the second game of the series to determine the city Class AA champion to represent the city in the national industrial event at Akron. Power and Light won the first game of the series last week-end, 8 to 3, and if victorious in Saturday’s tilt retain their title as city AA champ. HEN RALLY SHORT By United Prcm MILWAUKEE, Sept. I.—A nin thinning rally Wednesday was nearly successful for Toledo, but after replacing Orwoll, Milwaukee won, 9 to 6. Boxing Men'lmpressed With Form Shown by Former Champion. GOOD FRAME OF MIND Challenger’s Mental Attitude Apparently Healthy. * BY CLARK B. KELSEYI United Pres* Staff Correspondent LINCOLN FIELDS, 111., Sept. I. Bronzed and hardened by rigorous training, Jack Dempsey today appeared ty be in the best condition he has shown since he beat Luis Angel Firpo four years ago. Unless something unforeseen occurs, experts 'agree, Dempsey will be as fit as he ever can. be to win back the heavyweight championship when he meets Gene Tunnejf Sept. 22. Dempsey is in such good shape physically that boxing men are noticeably impressed. He weighs 198 pounds, four or five less than when he started training, and his weight will be reduced an equal amount before the fight. Shows Some Consideration Dempsey usually exhibits the same remorseless “killej” spirit in training he had when he was at the crest of his ability. But at tinges a streak of softness toward his sparring mates has appeared and he shows a little more consideration for them than he did when he was at his best. Dempsey is a different man in spirit than the fellow who fought Tqnney a year ago. He grins and jokes with his training assistants. Without Jack Kearns’ lawsuits to bother him, Dempsey’s /nental attitude seems much more healthy. And he is very much in earnest about his desire to regain the championship. “I think I’ll win inside of seven or eight rounds,” he told the United Press. ‘‘Last year I was champion. I boxed to try to save what I had. This year I’m not champion, and with* everything to gain I’m going out to make it a fight. I’m going to be a punching fool, and Tunney’ll find me a very different man than I was lfct year.” I Till at Camp One of Tunney’s former sparring mates, “Osk” Till of Rochester, N. Y„ has been working with Dempsey, shooting the rapier-like Tunney left to the Californian’s head and body. Dempsey is devoting most of his attention to blocking that punch, or slipping it. With his other sparring partners, Dempsey bores in with his old weaving attack. “Dutch” Meisner, a newcomer appeared Wednesday. He entered the ring full of ambition and left it after one round, full of despair. He was knocked down once and was hanging onto the ropes when the bell saved him from a knockout.
