JOHNSON AND HOOVER PLAY PQLITICSJ’OKER President and Senatorial Nominations in Home State Are Stakes. BY BAY TUCKER Times Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Aug. 31.—With the republican nomination for president and Senate as possible stakes, Herbert Hoover and Senator Hiram Johnson are engaged in a grim political poker game in California, according to reports reach here. Though the ancient enemies, by the force of circumstances, have leached the stage of sitting down at the same table in the game, they have not yet "called” each other. It Is understood, however, that Hoover men in Cali'omia have made peace overtures to Johnson, promising that if he would bury the hatchet he has frequently used against Hoover, they would be willing to forget old grudges they hold against the doughty Senator. Johnson Withholds Reply Johnson, his friends say, has made no answer to these emissaries from the rival camp. They have intimated he will reserve both his answer and his fire for a while, and that his decision may rest upon Hoover’s attitude toward the SwingJohnson bill during the next session of Congress. Johnson is determined to push the Boulder Dam measure through, and may find Hoover’s political aspirations an asset in this connection. Both men have much to gain or lose from the way they play their cards. Though Johnson has publicly acknowledged his recovery from the sting cf the presidential bee, he does want to return to the Senate next year and he is in a position to make things uncomfortable for Hoover in the latter’s candidacy for the G. O. P, nomination. Both Have Strong Friends Hoover must have the backing of his home state if he is to make headway at the convention. In 1920 Johnson showed his power by defeating Hoover in the presidential primaries by 168,000. But the Hooverites are not without their strength. The presidential primaries are in May and the national convention is in June, while the senatorial primaries will not be held until August 3. In other words, Hoover’s hurdles come before Johnson'S, and if Hoover happens to take them in good form, that is, if he should win the nomination—he would be able to retaliate. PEPPERMINT THRIVES IN HOWARD COUNTY Experiment On Farm North of Kokomo Is Successful. By United Press KOKOMO, Ind., Aug. 31.—Peppermint, one of the most profitable of crops, bids fair to become a thriving business in the prairie muck belt of Howard County, which extends several miles northeastward from the northern limits of Kokomo. The interest in the mint comes from results obtained this year by Alvin Miller, living on a farm five miles northeast of Kokomo . Miller planted one and one-half acres in mint last spring. He harvested his crop ten days ago, obtaining twenty-three and one-half pounds of oil. Prices now quoted on the oil range from $3.25 to $3 50 per pound. That quotation would make Miller’s crop worth $55 an acre. Miller said that the second year crop is always much better than the first and he expects his returns to be greater next year.

Dignity in New Dwelling
- ' ... ......
Dignity of line and excellence of wirkmanship are outstanding features of the new residence just complete at 5102 N. Meridian St., by H. L. Simons. The house is Italian in its inspiration, two stories in height with ore story wings at each side. Tle north wing extends as a portecochere above the drive, while that on the south is a sunroom, with arch-topped French doors on the east opening onto a comer terrace. This sunroom also has a double French door on the west, and a solid row of long casement windows on the south. On the north wall of the sunroom are two archways—one a doorway opening into the living room, the other a tall arch-topped recess filled with bookshelves. The sunroom is of small, mat-surfaced tiles in autumn leaf shades of tan and russet, the walls canvassed and painted in warm ivory, like those of the livingroom, dining room and hallways. Two other entrances lead into the house, in addition to those opening through the sunroom. At the center front is a formal entrance door framed in carved limestone and deeply recessed. The door is of dark oak, with a small “peep-hole” of leaded glass. This door opens into a grade-level vestibule, from which two steps lead to the great hallway. The ornamental Iron stairway is

lng heat of the sun and after a few weeks the cloth began to fade, losing its pristine glory. Then comes the wear test after the shade has been rolled up and down a number of times. The poorer qualities of window shades rapidly crinkle and crack. The enamel surface gives way and pin holes develop. The “filling” falls out of poor window shade cloth in a comparative few weeks. Curry handles the dependable line of Tontine window shades and some of his customers have proved by the "wear tests” that the guarantee under which these high grade blinds have been sold are dependable. They are washable, a feature which attracts the attention of all housewives. A splendid assortment of colors is kept in stock by this Fountain Square firm. With such window shade materials, the housewife can laugh at the semi-annual worries of past years when the job of trying to make the window shades presentable was faced. Curry also handles splendid lines of linoleums, drapery rods, awings and art goods. He has a well-ar-ranged store for display and demonstration purposes, and his years of experience in this line of business have given him a reputation for “knowing his goods.”
