HOP FOR ROME TODAY IF WIND IS FAVORABLE Dry Night, Clearing Skies Gives Hope for Start of Old Glory. Pn United Press ROOSEVELT FIELD, N. Y„ Aug. 30.^— clearing skies after a comparatively dry night enabled the crew of the monoplane Old Glory to plan for a start to Rome today -if the wind permits. Lloyd W. Bertaud, James Do Witt Hill and their plane have been ready for several days and Old Glory has remained on the tilted runway here. The fliers require a west wind to take off with their heavily loaded ship. Gasoline was burned on the runway last night to dry it and cinders were used to fill puddles. Ontario Flights Delayed By United 1 rest WINDSOR, Ont., Aug. 30.—Ontario’s two pending trans-Atlar.tic non-stop flights to Windsor and Londqn, England, appeared likely today to be delayed at least another twenty-four honrs. The flight committee of the Royal Windsor plane here announced that latest weather reports from Sir Frederick Stupa ri, at Toronto said rain and fog, wb'ch held up both flights yesterday, continued in the St. Lawrence valley today. Postpone London Flight By United Press LONDON, Ont., Aug. 30.—Flight of the Sir John Carling to London, England, has been definitely postponed until tomorrow at least, Lieut. Terry Tully, pilot, to the United Press today. Postponement of the flight was caused by adverse weather conditions reported in the St. Lawrence Valley. MOTHER AND TWO GIRLS LEAP TO ESCAPE FIRE Residence Damaged SSOO by Early ' Morning Flames. Mrs. Myrtle Phrelkeld and her daughters, Thelma, 4,- and Stella, 13, jumped from a window at their home at 1936 W. Vermont St., into which they had Just moved Monday, to escape flames which did SSOO damage at 2:30 a. m. today. The mother and two children were sleeping in the front room on the first floor, furniture not yet having been arranged in the rest of the house. The fire, of undetermined origin, broke out in the kitchen. The mother was awakened by a bread company delivery man pounding on the window. Flames had shut joss the front exit and she was forced to escape with her children out the window. OPEN EDINBURG BRIDGE DURING FAIR WEEK Work on Structure Will Be Resumed Later. John D. Williams, State highway department director, announced today that traffic on United States route 31 will be permitted to use the Edinburg bridge, now under construction, Instead of being forced tO| detour five miles, during State fair week. Pavement has been completed on this road between Indianapolis' and Columbus for some time and only the uncompleted bridge made the detour necessary. Work on the bridge will be resumed after fair week, Williams said. NEIGHBORHOOD FEUD BLAMED IN SLAYING Question Girl, Five Youths About Deaths of Kentucky Couple. By United Pr<as DIXON, Ky. f Aug. 30.—A neighborhood feud was assigned by officials today as the motive for killing of Fred Russell, 21, and his sweetheart, Pauline Dearmond, 16. Preparations were made to question a girl "nd five youths. Ethel Stephens, 18, said to have been ii> a roadhouse with her two brothers, John and Claude Stephens, on the night the couple disappeared, is held. She is a striking blonde. Miss Dearmond was a brunette, several strands of blonde hair were found on her clothing when she was found, almost dead, Sunday. COOLIDGE LEAVES SOON Return to Washington Is Set for Next Week. By United Press RAPID CITY, S. D., Aug. 30. President Coolidge will leave here for his return trip to Washington some time next week, probably Sept. 9, it was announced officially at the summer executive offices today. The President will stop at Brookings, S. D., to dedicate the State Agricultural School’s library there, but will make no other stop on his return trip, it was said. Griest, Winchester, executive secretary of the Indiana State Teachers retirement fund, today admitted that he had informed Governor Jackson he would not accept appointment as State superintendent of public instruction to succeed Charles F. Miller.
