300.000 SEND • IN'REPORT ON CROPOUTLOOK Form Basis of Monthly Reports Made Out By U. S. Farm Department. Times Washinnton Bureau. 1322 New York Avenue WASHINGTON, Aug. 23.—Add another item to the United States record of “world’s biggest.” It’s a staff of approximately 300,000 reporters working for the United States Department of Agriculture, and ultimately for themselves, through the department’s crop reporting board. According to a statement by W. P. Callander, board chairman, crop and live stock are being received at different times during the year from about 300,000 American farmers scattered in all parts of the country. These reports, tabulated in sealed rooms cut off from all communication with the outside world, form the basis of agriculture department crop and live stock estimates. Secrecy in handling the reports is occasioned by the fact that, when released, they frequently raise havoc with speculative markets, and advanced information about their contents would be worth millions of W During the present year the monthly crop estimates are based upon about 40,000 Individual reports, the cotton estimates on about 20,000 the acreage estimates on about 150,000, and the live stock estimates on approximately 100,000, hog estimates on about 80,000, truck crop estimates on approximately 10,000, and price estimates on about 8,000 individual reports. Statistics show that more people have died from overeating than from starvation.

WANTS SHOALS CHEAPPOWER Town Thinks It Should Share in Electricity. j Times Washtnoton Bureau. 1322 New York Avenue WASHINGTON, Aug. 25.—Decision on the application of the City of Muscle Shoals for cheap Government electricity* is being delayed to allow filing of legal briefs ay the muncipality, the Judge Advocate General's office said today. The little Albama town has applied for a small quantity of power from the Government hydroelectric plant at Muscle Shoals. Army engineers, In charge of the plant, forwarded the application to the Judge Advocate General in whose hands it has rested for the past month. All electricity generated at Muscle Shoals is now being purchased by the Alabama Power Company. The Judge Advocate General ruled three years ago that the army engineers had legal right to sell power to this company. Representatives of the muncipality contend that the engineers have as much authority, or more, to sell a part of the power to the town which nestles at foot pf the dam.
