ULTAR ROBBER GOT $300,000 Ray Marsden Confesses Novel Crime Career. Bu United Press . COLUMBUS, Ohio. Aug. 24. Church robbery was something never tried before and this was the reason Ray Marsden, now a convict in the Ohio penitentiary claims he started on his career of fobbing altars. In his latest confession, made to newspaper men today, he said that he had obtained more than $300,000 from various churches over the country in the last twenty-eight years. He claims to have some of the loot yet including a SIO,OOO crazier stolen from Cardinal Daugherty in Philadelphia. “I started stealing in 1899,” he said today. “I was flat broke and saw a wooden box In St. Patrick’s church in Janesville, Wis., I opened it and found $6f.0,” he said. He continued robbing churches from then on. “Whenever we had a hard time robibng a church in the regular way we would burn it,” he said. “Then during the excitement we would rush in and take everything valuable. When the priests rushed out from their houses to the church we tfkould loot their property, too.” wHe told reporters once that he burned St. Paul’s Cathedral at Montreal, a Catholic church at Brummond, Que., and the shrine at St. Anne de Beaupre and the Basilica at Quebec. Confession Believed Myth Bit United Preen PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 24.—Diocesan authorities here scout the latest “confession” of Ray Marsden, Ohio State penitentiary convict and church robber, who says he robbed the residence of Cardinal Dougherty last summer and took, among other things, a crozier, valued at SIO,OOO. No crozier was stolen at the time the cardinal’s home was entered, it was said today, and a youth who was later arrested and confessed the robbery, is now serving a prison sentence. The greatest loss sustained by the cardinal was a ring valued at several thousand dollars and this was recovered.
