FRANCE READY • TO FIGHT DRYS r League of Nations Faces Split on Prohibition/ jpy United Press PARIS, Aug. 23.—Prance, frankly worried by the activities of prohibitionists in the League of Nations, is preparing to fight them. Finland, with the support of Poland and Sweden, has asked the league to discuss means of fighting alcoholism at its September meeting. France, as the leading wine-grow-ing country, expects to have the support of -Italy and other grapegrowing nations in opposing any Vote by the league in favor of prohibition. Members of the Chamber of Depities representing wine producing regions called the government’s attention to the harm a league vote on alcoholism might do, and the government agreed to take up their Cause. * “If Geneva takes up the question of prohibition, Prance must cite the example of ‘dry’ America,” said Edouard Barthe, head of the deputation sent to the government. “We must protest vigorously nofc only against extension of prohibition, (jut ayainst America’s dr which in addition to being WPow at free commerce has caused fraud, criminality and alcoholism in America instead of improving the ' nation’s morals.” New Theater for Gary Hv Times Special GARY, Ind., Aug. 23.—Erection of a $750,000 theater in the W. Fifth Ave. busines section here will begin within three weeks, according to Peter Kalleres, general manager of the Kalleres and Loupas Brothers theatrical enterprises.
