PORTER COUNTY’S FAIR OPENS AT VALPARAISO Fiftieth Annual Event to Continue Through Saturday Bp Timt Special VALPARAISO, Ind., Aug. 16. Porter County’s fiftieth annual fair opened here today to continue through Saturday. Race prizes totaling $2,375 are offered. Today is derby day, with a card including a 2:24 pace, 2:16 trot and a half mile running race. Wednesday has been set aside as a special day for American Legion members, Spanish-American and Civil War veterans. Thursday will be merchants’ and manufacturers’ day, and Friday, farm bureau and children’s day. of the local plant of the Indiana Portland Cement Company, operated for the entire period without a single lost-time accident. During June the plant lost its safety flag, presented by the Portland Cement Association, because of a lost-time mishup. At Superintendent V. K. Newcomer’s request the Greencastie mill was given a chance to redeem itself by trying to go through July without % misstep. v The flag was returned to the plant and hoisted on the plant flagpole July 1. At midnight July 31 the banner was still flying—the mill had reached its goal. Aid Budget Making By Times Special EVANSVILLE, Ind., Aug. 16. Business men will sit in with city and county officials for the first time in history here to assist in making budgets. Eleven men from the tax conference committee of the Evansville Chamber of Commerce will offer aid to the officials.

HEART DISEASE GAINS Soars to New High Level as Cause of Illinois Deaths. Bu United Press SPRINGFIELD, 111., Aug. 16. Statistics released today by Dr. Isaac Rawlings, State health director, Indicate that heart disease has soared to anew high level as a cause of death In Illinois list year. For the State outside Chicago the number of fatalities due to this cause was 7,704 in 1926, as compared with 6,947 for the year previous.
