Annual Wightman Cup Matches Between America and England Started

SAINTS TAKE ON INDIANS FOLLOWING MILLER WIND-UP Finale With Kels Today—Double-Headers Carded With Allen’s Crew Saturday and Sunday.

Tribe fans were to get their last glimpse of the 1927 Millers today as the Indians battled the Kels in the series finale. Minneapolis is the third Club to finish its season’s performance in Indianapolis, which gives an inkling that the diamond campaign’s end is not far distant. On Saturday, the Saints,. piloted by pugnacious Nick Allen, will invade Washington Park for four games which will be played off in two double headers, one twin bill Saturday and another Sunday. Saturday’s first fray will star tat 2. Tanks Here Monday On Monday, ■which by the way won’t be "ladies’ and children’s day,” the New York Yankees, chesty and powerful, will appear in an exhibition fracas with the Indians. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Tony Lazzeri and other swatters will perform, their appearance having been guaranteed. The contest will get under way at 3. The Tribe will have Tuesday and Wednesday idle as they prepare for their final swing around the western half of the circuit, opening in Kansas City next Thursday. "I do not choose to be run off the mound by the lowly Indians,” old Rube Benton no doubt remarked Thursday as he pushed his ancient frame out on the Washington Park greensward to oppose the Indians in the third of the series. Nearly Blanks Tribe And old Rube went the route and nearly scored a shut-out, winning over the Betzelites, 5 to 1. Holke

crossed the plate in the ninth and saved the Indians the shame of being goose-egged by the veteran. The Millers counted five runs on thirteen hits and the Indians got one marker on ten hits. That shows how Benton tightened in the pinches. He was given fine support, three double plays occuring behind him, but at his age in life he figures on his mates carrying some of the load. Tucker Hits Homer Leverett hurled for the home pastimers and was scored against in the first, seventh and ninth Ollie Tucker blasted a homer off him in • the ninth with Smith on ahead. The fielding of McAuley, Emmer, Betzel and Matthews was outstanding. Manager Bruno handled eleven chances at second without a miss. The Indians got men on bases in seven of the nine rounds, but were unable to cross the plate until the final stanza. Three two-base hits off Rube were wasted. The lone Tribe tally came in a peculiar way and was muffed by many onlookers. Holke started the Indian half of the ninth with a single and moved to second on Miller's single (his third of the day). Betzel forced Miller, McAuley to Emmer, Holke taking third. On Enger’s fast-hopper tp McAuley, the Miller second sacker’tagged at Betzel and missed when Betzel turned back toward first. But McAuley threw to Ldftus, at first, in time to retire Enger, Holke crossing the plate. Betzel reversed and sprinted for second, but was nailed by Loftus’ throw to Emmer, and was tagged sliding in for the gameending out. Not a Force-out Holke’s run counted because he was home ahead of the third out, which was not a force-out. And that's how near ancient Rube Benton was to a shutout—a few seconds.. Fred Haney, third sacker obtained in the Yoter sale to the Cubs, called at the park this morning to talk terms. The fans are eager to see him in action. Today was "ladies’ and kids’ day” again at the park.

Bn United Press NEW YORK, Aug. 12.—Helen Wilis, queen of American tennis, was to open the fifth annual series of the Wightman Cup matches late this afternoon when she played Joan Fry of the British team at Forest Hills. Mrs. Molla Mallory was to meet Mrs. Kathleen McKane Godfree, of England, in the second singles match of the day. In the doubles, Mrs. A. H. Chapin, Jr„ and Miss Eleanor Goss were to oppose Mrs. John Hill and Miss G. R. Sterry, representing England. Competition in all three contests was expected to be close. Miss Fry gave Miss Wills a royal battle in the 1925 Wightman Cup matches before being defeated. Mrs. Godfree defeated Mrs. Mallory when they last played in this country. Since the cup was first offered in 1923, the Americans and the British players each have won two tournaments.

WITH THE BIG LEAGUERS

By United Press Mark Koenig, with a wild toss in the eleventh inning, gave Washington a victory over the league leading New York Yankees. 3-2. Judge had tripled and the relayed throw finally went to the Yankee shortstop. Koenig promptly tossed the ball out of the field, permitting Judge to trip home. Up to that time it had been a pitcher's duel beween Lisenbee and Pipgras, with neither having much of an advantage. Grover Cleveland Alexander proved he hasn't gone back much when, for nine innings, he dazzled the Pittsburgh Pirates and permitted St. Louis to win. 2-1. Up until the sixth inning the Corsairs were unable to hit Alexander and then Lloyd Waner looped out a home run that was the Pirates’ only marker. Alex, incidentally, permitted only four hits in the full game. The Chicago Cubs gained another full game in the National League race when Charley Root blanked the Cincinnati Reds, 2-0. It was Root's twenty-first victory of the season and he permitted only six hits. Cliff Heathcote's two hits, one a triple, served to help the Cubs to victory, as Luque was pitching effectively. Fonseca’s line drive in the tenth

Tilden Beats Brugnon in Semi-Final Lanky Philadelphian Advances in Southampton Invitational Net Meet. By United Press SOUTHAMPTON, N. Y., Aug. 12. —William Tilden today reached the final round of men's singles in the invitational tennis tournament at the Meadow Club when he defeated Jacques Brugnon of France, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. The gallery saw Tilden at his best and although Brugnon occasionally put over some fine placements, the Philadelphian always was his master. In the first set, Brugnon went to, the net cautiously and In the second he stormed it in an attempt to throw Tilden out of his stride. In the final set he retired to the baseline, but the maneuver was no more successful and Tilden’s whirlwind driving was too much for him.

inning scored Burnett and gave Cleveland a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Up to then it had been a brilliant pitching duel between Thomas and Miller. Each permitted seven hits. Boston defeated Philadelphia Nationals, 5-4. Willoughby passed three men in the sixth and then allowed Brown to single. Dazzy Vance pitched effectively, but the Giants hit a little more effectively, and New York defeated Brooklyn, 3-2. The Giants bunched their hits. McManus hit safely three times, aided in bringing In four runs and helped Detroit defeat St. Louis, 6-2.
