NATIONAL PARK 1 RUSH GREATER THANJN 1926 Yosemite Shows Increase in Visitors of 126 Per Cent Over Last Year. WASHINGTON, Aug. 10.—All travel records to American national parks are being shattered this year by a tremendous movement of auto tourists from the East. With two or three minor exceptions, where late snows prevented opening of the roads, every park has shown an increase in visitors over the 1928 record, when nearly two million tourists visited the nineteen national parks. The most impressive gain was registered by Yosemite National Park in California, where, up to July 15, an increase of 126 per cent in number of visitors had taken place as compared with the same period last year. Increases for other prominent western parks included 20 per cent at Grand Canyon, 30 per cent at Rocky Mountain Park and 35 at Mesa Verde Park. Yellowstone About Even Yellowstone Pgirk, the largest, due to a rather late season, was just I even with last year’s record on July 15, but since has recorded an increase certain to shatter last year’s attendance. The only national park east of the Mississippi River, Lafayette to Maine, has shared the travel increase, with a gain of 41 per cent over last year’s figures. The only park to show any considerable decrease is Crater Lake, where deep snows prevented opening until long* after the usual season had started. Asa result, up to July 15, about 10,000 less visitors had entered this park than usual. Year-Round Parks Few The exact number of visitors recorded in the parks last year was 1,930,865. A total of 38,4040 persons were recorded as visiting the twen-ty-seven national monuments of the country, most of which are located in the Southwest. % Only four national parks are located in climates that permit year--round visiting. They are Grand Canyon, Sequoia, Yosemite and Mt. Ranier.
