Steerage may be one thing and “second class” another, but the life of an “engine wiper” is about the last strata. Both Clifford Gueutal, 20, of 438 N. Arsenal Ave., and Turpin Davis, 22, of 23 S. Irvington Ave., agree that their job in the engine room of the Leviathan while crossing the Atlantic Ocean to England made them about as "hot as proverbial Hades,” but that it was worth the effort. Gueutal, a sophomore at Wabash, and Davis, a junior at Butler, left Indianapolis June 28 to bum passage to England. Each started with SSO. On their arrival home about a week ago Gueutal had 6 cents and Davis 10.

“We were worse than bums,” laughed Gueutal. % Bedbugs and Thrills “An engine wiper has about the lowest job on a ship. About twenty of us worked in a room twenty by twenty below the water line. Hot I It was the hottest job I ever had. We slept in the forecastle at night —a hole overrun with bedbugs. It was fairly alive with ’em. But it was a great thrill.” Their impressions of England were all very favorable with the ex 4 ception of English women. “It“s hard to explain just what was wrong with them said Turpin. “Their clothes were nice enough, but they seemed rather sloppy, .no class. We didn’t meet a good looking girl until we got to New York.”

“Gee! I was glad to set my eye on a pretty girl,” said Gueutal. Movies All Old “English speech seems rather affected,” they said. “We could hardly understand ' what they said in their theaters. Their movies are mostly old American productions that we’ve forgotten about. We saw “The Connecticut Yankee in the Court of King Arthur.” The two walked and “bummed” rides from New York to Indianapolis. “We didn’t have enough money to sleep, so we walked and rode. At Columbus, Ohio, it rained. We got kicked out of the Union Station there. We were hungry and tired and mighty glad to see Indianapolis again.” Gueutal is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Davis a member of Phi Delta Theta. LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS ON RIVER FAITHFUL Mississippi Flood Relief Ship Captains Praise Service t NEW YORK, Aug. s.—The loyalty to their work of the keepers of the lights in the United States Lighthouse Service was again attested in the case of the Mississippi flood. Reports to the bureau show that post lights along the lower river were maintained during the entire flood period and under the most trying circumstances. Their work has been commented upon by captains of the Government flood rescue fleet of Coast Guard, navy and lighthouse vessels plying the river at night, and was of the greatest assistance in guiding vessels in this work. With the river out of its banks, flowing through wooded areas, few indications of the main course of the, river remained, of which the post lights were the most important.
