DRYNAVYWILL ' SHIFT ATTACK New England Fleet Sent to , Florida Coast. Bil United Press WASHINGTON, Aug. 4. The coast guard’s war against rum runners is to be shifted from New England to the South. Destroyers, cutters, seaplanes and patrol boats used to break up rum row off New York will be sent to the Florida and Gulf coasts Sept. 1. Admiral F. C. Billard, commandant of the guard, today ordered three “dry navy” bases established in Florida. Already secret service agents of the guard are operating in Florida, and the Bahamas, arranging details for the new offensive. ... The bases will be established at Fernandiana under Sit. Com. T. S. Klinger; at St. Petersburg, under Lt. Com. J. A. Starr, and at Ft. Lauderdale, under Com. P. F. Lauriat, chief of the East coast division. Admiral Billard has detailed about twenty ships to campaign against the liquor smugglers. Six destroyers will act as a roving squadron while seaplanes armed with machine guns and equipped with wireless telephones will scout for “enemy ships.” The drive has been timed for the beginning of the winter tourist sea-, >son. Admiral Billard plans to break up the liquor smuggling business before the season reaches its height.
U. S. ACES TO WELCOME WAR FOE, OCEAN FLIER Ten Years Ago They Met German Flier in Air Combat. Bn United Press NEW YORK, Aug. 4.—Announcement that Captain Udet, second ranking German aviation ace, would shortly attempt a flight from Berline to New York, has aroused interest as to how he would be received by those who ten years ago went into the air to meet him as a most dreaded foe. The American Society for Promotion of Aviation has selected a committee of accredited aces from among its members who will serve as a reception committee to meet, the German ace when he arrives. One of the committee selected is Kenneth L. Porter, formerly of the 147th Pursuit Squadron, who had the distinction of meeting with Captain Udet on his first flight over the lines and engaging him in an aerial battle. Although their reputation has not become national, Indianapolis has its own Ford and Glenn. They are the New Boys, the sons of an attorney, Edward F. New, Sr. These brothers have their own act in which they impersonate the famous radio duo. They sing and play together, both for radio audiences and on the stage when opportunities come. And the wonder of it all is their extreme youthfulness. They attend the Benjamin Harrison School, where the elder is in the fifth and the younger in the fourth grade. In the past they have come before WFBM’s microphone and will be featured there this coming season. The Shenandoah Male Chorus will be the attraction at 6 p. m. for receptionists of WIP, Philadelphia. The WLS Players will be on the air with their verse and music program, from 6:45 to 7:55 p. m., transmitted by WLS, Chicago. Light classical ensemble numbers will be played by the Pastel Trio on their 7 p. m. program over KFI, Los Angeles. Charles H. Partington, accordion soloist, will be featured on the studio program at WSAI, Cincin,nati, at 7 p. m.
