INDIANA SHOWS JUNE BUSINESS ABOVENORMAL Margin of 3 Per Cent Recorded in Industrial Production. Bu Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Ind., July 30. “Industrial production during June stood at 3 per cent above normal and cross currents were noticeable in the five industries upon which it is based,” said Charles F. Benzel, director of the Indiana University bureau of business research, in his current report to the Indiana Business Review which is published by the Fletcher American National Bank, Indianapolis. “Building was considerably (65 per cent) above its normal trend, as was the case in April and May. Pig irea production and electricity were also measurably above their points of estimated normal. Stone production was below its estimated figure, although it registered a considerable improvement over recent months.* Benzel’s report shows that June* business in Indiana was 3 per cent better than during May, showing some recovery from the seasonal recession in May. There was also an of 1.5 per cent over June, 192ijt Xgfliana business is on a high plaiiH Wenzel indicates, following **ady progress during recent years, underlying conditions reflect stability and prospects are for continued good volumes of business. “Coal production is outstanding with a gain of 46.5 per cent over last month, and is followed by stone production, livestock receipts, and automobile accessories production for wh*ch increases of over 5 per cent were registered,” said Benzel. “Gains of less than 5 per cent over last month w T ere shown by wholesale dry goods, bank debits, and life insurance. “Automobile production and new car sales suffered most severely with respectively of 15.5 per cent and 20 per cent. Seasonal trends accounted for the losses in pig iron production, electricity and department store sales. Other lines showing declines are building contracts, bank deposits, chain drug store sales, postoffice receipts and advertising. POP DELIGHTS ESKIMOS Ice Cream Cones, Hot Doge Also Are Popular. NOME, Alaska, July 29.—Soda pop, ice cream cones and hot dogs have won the heart of the Eskimos iff the Etah region, Frank Connibeare, hotel keeper who lives north of the Arctic Circle, says Indians and Eskimos come for many miles to gorge themselves on the white man’s delicacies.

BEGIN HERE TODAY FLORA CARTWRIGHT chides her niece, VERA CAMERON, for her old maidish ways, out-of-date hairdress and business-like manner. That same day Vera is promoted to assistant to JERRY MACKLYN, new advertising manager of Peach Bloom Cosmetics . Jerry instantly proposes as an advertising scheme to transform Vera, with the aid of Peach Bloom cosmetics, into a beauty and to photograph her in each stage of the transformation. Vera indignantly refuses and resolves to resign. She reconsiders, however, when she falls suddenly in love with a man whom she hears called SCHUYLER. She hears him tell a companion he is going to Lake Minnetonka in June. „ KITTY PROCTOR, a professional demonstrator, whom Jerry calls in. agree to make Vera over. Verft's emerald eyes cause Jerry to remember an uncaptioned Sunday supplement picture he has in his desk and he asks Kitty to use the picture as a model. At the end of three weeks, Vera and Jerry go to Flora’s apartment. Vera tells them she is going to Minnetonka in June. Just before they retire. Flora agrees to teach Vera what she knows about charm and appeal if Vera will keep "hands off’’ of Jerry, whom Flora likes. Vera agrees though unaccountably is not enthusiastic about her aunt’s Infatuation for Jerry. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER IX ■ii | HIS is more than I had | r P I bargained for,” Jerry 1 * ) Macklyn grinned at Vera Cameron and her aunt, Flora Cartwright, seated side by side on the living room couch. “I’ve finished my job. I said I’d turn you into a beauty, Miss Cameron, if the Peach Bloom cosmetics were any good, and I’ve done it. “Nonsense, Jerry Macklyn!” Flora cut in gaily. “In the first place,” Jerry began serously, “every man likes a pretty girl, the prettier the better. You’re more than pretty now, Vee-Vee; you’re beautiful. But just beauty alone won’t get you very far. You’ve got to have charm and—er —sex appeal if you want to have men fluttering around you.” "I—l haven’t any sex appeal,” Vera acknowledged bitterly. “How do you know you haven’t?” Jerry challenged her. “You haven’t given your poor little S. A. a chance. You went around looking like an old maid school teacher with ‘Keep off the grass’ signs plastered all over you.” “I have certainly tried to keep my business relationships on an impersonal basis. Any girl w'ho uses the lure of sex to advance herself in an office is beneath contempt,” Vera retorted angrily. Flora Cartwright clapped her small hands and laughed deliciously. “Here, here!” Jerry roared. “Wait now, don’t fly off the handle! You wanted to know what kind of a girl a man falls in love with. I’ll tell you—the kind of girl who never in the world would pull a line like that.” “Oh, I know what you’re going to to say,” Vera moaned. “You’re going to pull the ancient wheeze that men don’t like girls who have brains. Beautiful and dumb!” “That’s just where you’re wrong,” Jerry contradicted her triumphantly. “It’s no credit to a man if a dumb Dora fall for him. He has an uneasy suspicion that she hasn’t sense enough to know what a prize she’s drawn. “What a man likes is a girl with
beauty, charm and brains enough to conceal the fact that she has more brains thaan he has. Your one big trouble, Vee-Vee, is going to be that you are so darned clever! “You make every man you work with feel like an ignoramous, who ought to be fired so that you cOuld have his job.” “Did I make you feel that way?” Vera demanded indignantly. “Did you” Jerry echoed. “Why, it’s been all I could do to keep myself from running to old man Canfield and saying, ‘Canfield, I’m licked. I’m through. And I’m a dirty dog for-holding down a job that rightfully belongs to somebody ejse. Make Miss Cameron advertising manager, Canfield. She .knows more about advertising in a minute than I do in a year.’ ” “Why don’t you?” “Because, doggone you,” Jerry shouted at her, “when I get as far as Canfield’s office I run into little Rosemary Fitch who flutters those china-blue eyes at me and looks up at me as if she thinks I’m Apollo, Lothario and Valentino all rolled into one. My chest swells so that my vest buttons pop off and I go back to my office all primed up to show the world what a great buy I am.” “What a pity you haven’t Rosemary Fitch as a secretary,” Vera snapped. “Yes, isn’t it?” Jerry agreed, grinning broadly. “But the old man beat me to her, and of course you are useful to have around. Now, listen, there’s one thing that you don’t know but that you’ve bot to learn and then you can forget everything else. • “I’ll bet you can tell her what that is, Mrs. Cartwright.” Jerry turned to Flora, who was looking a little forlorn at being so persistently ignored. “Call me Flora, Jerry,” she brightened instantly. “Os course I can. It is the beauty cree<J: ‘I believe that I am utterly beautiful and utterly desirable. I believe that no man can look upon me without pleasure and without desire.’” “Perfect!” Jerry applauded. “You forgot to say that I’d be a conceited little wretch that every woman would want to murder,” Vee-Vee snapped. “You get me all wrong,” Jerry protested. “I don’t want you to be self-conscious and conceited in the usual meaning of those words. But I do want you to radiate beauty, to make every person you come in contact with realize your beauty because you wear it like a royal cloak. “And there’s one other thing for you to tell yourself—and believe with all your heart: Every person in the world can teach you something; every person has at least a modicum of interest or charm or lovaoleness for you, and it is up to you to discover it. “When you meet a man—a woman, either, for that matter, but we happen to be talking of men—look at him with Joyous expectancy, look glad to meet him—” “Shall I adopt this attitude toward every man I meet?” VeeVee dimpled, widening her green eyes at him. “I should think it might cause complications—” “It does,” Flora laughed and sighed. “Remember, darling, I have been married four times! But it certainly does make life interesting!” “I only want to be married once, and I want to stay married to nim forever,” Vee-Vee said softly. Jerry’s bright blue eyes contracted a little as if with pain, anti the ruddy color in his cheeks paled noticeably. “Well, that’s certainly definite enough, my dear pupil,” he grinned ruefully. “What sort of man is he?” “Well,” Vee-Vee flushed, “let us say he is extremely handsome, young and rich, socially prominent, of an old family.” She was thinking of his name, “Schuyler.” “If he’s all that,” Jerry frowned, while Flora's blue eyes watched him narrowly, "he's used to hiving girls and women hurl themselves at his head. It will take very special tactics to land a big fish like that. “Your cue is to act indifferent, to concentrate on every other desirable man in the hotel, so that you can speedily show him that competition for the favor of Vee-Vee Cameron is of the keenest, that it will be no snide job for him to horn in on even a scrap of your much sought-after time. “Listen, Vee-Vee, we can’t get very far with these lessons in charm just sitting and talking things over. I’ve got a better scheme than that. You’ve got three more weeks to get ready for your campaign, haven’t you? You II need practice. Suppose you take me on as a substitute sweetheart for three weeks—” “Jerry! Don’t be an idiot! Flora cried sharply, with a warning flash of her blue eyes at Vera. “That’s dangerous business and you know

“Os course I do,” Jerry Macklyn admitted grimly. “Maybe I want It to be dangerous—for Vee-Vee. At any rate, here’s my propostion—take it or leave it! I’ll beau you around for three weelgs. We’ll dine together, go to theaters, dance, play golf on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. And all the time I’ll coach you in the ways of a woman with a man.” “Where do I come in, Jerry Macklyn?” Flora demanded indignantly. “I suppose it was understood that I was to be a member of the faculty of the charm school, too.” “Why not make it a foursome about half the time ? You and young Peter, Vee-Vee and I? The kid needs example as well as direct instruction, and I know of no more competent graduate of the charm schol than Flora Cartwright!” “Does it always have to be—Peter and me, you and Vee-Vee?” Flora gave him a slow, tantalizing smile. “Oh, we’ll switch partners now and then, so Vee-Vee can practice on young Peter,” Jerry assured her innocently. “What do you say, VeeVee?” Before the girl could answer the door bell shrilled. Flora flew to answer it, throwing a gay comment over her shoulder: “I told Peter to stay away, but I knew he couldn’t do it. I don’t know what I’m going to do with the poor, infatuated infant!” But it was not Peter. It was the uniformed elevator boy, delivering an immense box of flowers. “Peter is so extravagant,” Flora murmured, a pleased smile playing over her face. Then suddenly her smile was wiped out; her blue eyes turned to ice. “It’s for you, Vera. From Peter, I suppose. “I think, Jerry,” she turned to the embarrassed young man, "that your time could be spent to better advantage in teaching a passe middleaged woman how to hold her suitors. Vee-Vee doesn’t seem to be in any urgent need of instruction.” Flora flashel an April smile at Jerry over Vee-Vee’s shoulder. “I’ve been so bored with poor, dear Peter. I’m glad he’s at last taken ‘no’ for an answer. You don’t know, Jerry, what a relief it will be to me to associate with a clever, mature man, a real man of the world! We’ll have great fun watching the youngsters, won’t we, Jerry?” Jerry Macklyn rumpled his incredible red hair with a distracted hand, looked as if he were about to run for his life; then a pair of emerald eyes flashed a provocative, challenging glance at him, an adorable mouth dimpled, and he muttered weakly, “Great fun! Good Lord! What have I let myself in for?” (To Be Continued) Jerry Macklyn make* an unusual request of Vee-Vee In the next chapter. Just as •he it about to start for MJnnetonka.
