Average Stock Prices
Average of twenty industrials Thursday was 180.73. up .64. new high record. Average of twenty rails was 138.98, off .18. Average of forty bonds was 97.17, off .03. By United Press NEW YORK, July 29.—With professionals expecting a drastic reader*- stocks generally made impressive advances today, to the utter discouragement of the 'bear crowd. Du Pont assumed market leadership, rising as much as 16 points to new high ground because of the announcement that the company had acquired a substantial block of United States Steel common stock. United States Steel also reached anew maximum price on the same factor. Although not so active as Steel or Du Pont, General Motors soared into record high territory with a gain of more than 2 points. Other issues reaching new heights on the advance were Allied Chemical, Atchison, General Electric, Yellow Truck and Union Pacific. Loans Bigger Describing the market, the Wall Street Journal’s financial review today said: Further aggresive advances in General Motors, Du Pont and Steel stood out in today’s market. These vigorous demonstrations were staged in the face of an increase of $82,219,000 in local brokerage loans during the week ended July 27. That this factor was ignored was undoubtedly due to the reduction in the Kansas City bank rate to 3% per cent from 4 per cent. This step was taken to foreshadow a similar cut at this center in the not-distant future. Late Reaction Stimulated by this prospect the whole industrial list was buoyant during the first four hours. Rails continued to quiet although Atchi-' son climbed to fresh record levels and Union Pacific reached its highest price. During the last hour, industrials turned somewhat reactionary. This development was clearly due to profit- taking which was encouraged by an advance in call money to 4 per cent from the renewal rate of 3% per cent. The firmer tone resulted from withdrawals approximating $25,000,000 by banks preparing for month-end settlement.

In the Cotton Market
(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, July 29.—The cotton market opened strong this morning, but after advancing 6 or seven points over the previous close, met selling from southern agencies. The map showed scattered showers over the belt and the predictions for the immediate futures were for a continuation of the same conditions. Two private estimates around fourteen and a half million for the coming crop appeared A ‘i of this should have supplied the bulls with sufficient buying power to materially advance the market, but recent buyers were not disposed to press their advantage and a reaction, of 20 points followed. Apparently the trade orders in the market are at a level slightly below 1870 for October. There is no change in the reneral situation. Profit taking is to be expected occasionally in view of the • coming governmental estimate and the -eports from private individuals. Buyers on declines are still fortified by the knowledge that the trade is doing the same. W'e favor purchases for that reason. NEW ORLEANS , High. Low. Close. In the Sugar Market
(By Thomson Sc McKinnon) NEW YORK. July 29.—The market continued steady throughout the session. There appeared to be additional Cuban support and there is said to be an Increasing reluctance on the part of Cuban interests to sell sugar at these levels. The demand for refined is improving as Is shown by the increased withdrawals on contract. The market will eventually be obliged to give full effect to the strong statistical situation. Press NEW YORK, July 29.—Today was Du Pont day on the New York Stock Exchange. Under the influence of known stock purchases and rumored closer connections with the United States Steeel Corporation, stock of the E. I. Du Pont de Nemours Company and General Motors Corporation reached new high levels. Steel also went to a record mark, small buyers evidently climbing on the band wagon because the Du Ponts made heavy purchases of the shares. An increase in the call money rate from 314 to 4 per cent and announcement that the Federal Trade Commission would investigate rumors that the Du Pont purchases of Steel stock presaged placing of Du Pont representatives on the Steel directorate caused slight recessions late in the day. The market as a whole was irregular. Sales totaled 2,064,300 shares. / Du Pont stock had a range of 17 points during the day, varying from 27414 to 291%. It closed at 290. A total of 29,400 shares were sold. Steel reached a high of 137%, but closed at 135% after sales of 128,500 shares. General Motors, controlled by the Du Ponts, got in on the play late in the day and rose to 228%, but receded to 226% at the close. Its low for the day was 224%. The day was enlivened by reports that, in addition to Steel purchases by the E. I. Du Pont Company, members of the Du Pont family as individuals were buying heavily. It was also reported in Wall Street .that the Mellon interests of Pittsburgh were buying Steel.

GRAIN TRADING BEARISH) ONLY ' SLIGHT RALLY More Than 2-Cent Drop in Wheat: Corn, Oats Off Over One Point. Bu United Press CHICAGO, July 29.—Today’s session in grain futures on the Chicago Board of Trade was again bearish, with only slight rallies in corn, which did not hold. ’ Closing prices found wheat 1% to 2% cents lower than the previous close, corn % to 1% cents off, and oats down % to % cents. Provisions closed lower. Wheat prices were off all session due to good weather in the belt and large deliveries on July contracts which caused that delivery to lose heavily and drag the deferred futures down with it. Receipts were 764 cars. The cash market was % to 1 cent lower. Corn showed signs of rallying early, but at mid-day had started downward and recovered only slightly at the close over the day's low prices. Weakness in wheat and good growing weather were bearish influences. Receipts were 49 cars. The cash market was % to 1 cent lower. Oats wre lower with other grains. Receipts were 70 cars.
