STUDENT BACKS DE PAUW ARMY ! TRAINING VOTE No Compulsion Used in Balloting Says Chief of p Y. M. C. A. ■ No compulsion was used on De Pauw University students who voted to continue compulsory military training through the Reserve Officers Training Corps, Gordon Ritter, 4415 Broadway, De Pauw student Y. M. C. A. president and student council member, said today. President Lemuel H. Murlin has been criticised for his method of securing permission of the De Pauw faculty to continue compulsory training another year after the faculty voted in May to make the instruction optional. Voted on Instruction ' It is said Murlin believed the~unit might disappear from the campus because of failure of 100 students to take the work if it was made Optional. The student government body took a vote on whether military instruction should be continued on request of the administration, Ritter said. “The ballot was made out to allow persons to vote for compulsory, optional training or abandonment of the local unit. Several voted for the optional, but I think no one voted for abandonment,” said Ritter. N No Compulsion Used "I think two-thirds of the stu'dents in the military department would favbr the compulsory feature. There is only a small portion of the student body which opposes the optional training.” Ritter said he did not know of any compulsion used in securing signatures to a petition passed out at fraternity hpuses to continue the compulsory training. ARMY ON TRAIL OF CORN BORER Thirty Scouts Working in Northeastern Indiana. Thirty government scouts are working in northeastern Indiana searching for the elusive cornborer, State Entomologist Frank N. Wallace announced today. Special patrols are now being planned to stop any movement of green corn from the infested area and rigid quarantine will be enforced. Asa result of the moth flight which started in June, scouts have discovered egg masses and young borers. The idea of the fall and winter clean-up was to destroy all corn stalks in which borers hibernate, to later emerge as moths which fly to distant fields and lay eggs. The clean-up was about 95 per cent effective, Wallace said. The quarantine line will run north and south through LaGrange, Noble and Whitley counties, and east and west through Whitley and Allen counties. While no corn on the cob may be shipped out of the infected area, there will be no restriction on new cdrn being-shipped into this area.
