CITY COUNCIL TO USE KNIFE ON TAXLEVIES Slashing Plan Agreed On at Secret Meeting Late Wednesday. City council members are ready to cut down proposed tax levies, calling for increase from $1.04 to $1.43, when the budget measure reaches them, it was indicated after a secret session late Wednesday. General agreement was reached to seek a 50-cent increase a day for all members of police and fire departments with exception of the chiefs. This would mean a total increase of $100,557.50 a year for the 556 firemen and about the same amount for the policemen. The board of works’ request for $2,051,920.75, an increase of $747,- . 215.79 over the present rate, was returned by William C. Buser, city controller, with orders to reduce the • amount $650,000. Buser also ordered the safety board to make a $170,000 reduction in its request for $2,830,303.03. Predictions that the new levy may be several cents less than the present rate, when finally passed, were made by a few of the councilmen. Councilman More said their will be fewer office-holders when the . council gets through pruning.
