French Museum Preserves Relics of Great Flight
Ask Parts of Planes Used by Lindy, Chamberlin and Byrd. Bit United Press PARIS, July 27. Lindbergh, Chamberlin and Byrd will be asked to give bits of their planes or parts of their maps or charts to the French museum of aviation which already houses many famous machines. In that museum are the wheels and undercarriage of the ill-fated “White Bird” of Nungesser and Coli, all that remains of the tragic expedition of French fliers across the Atlantic. There too will go the remains of St. Romans’ plane, fished from the ocean off Brazil, if the recovered parts are fully identified as from his Goliath. The museum already contains a fragment of the early planes of Santos Dumont and Bleriot, including a part of the machine which flew across the English Channel twenty years ago. There are motors which show in striking manner the advance made by aviation. The earliest used in planes which flew successfully were of but 25 H. P„ while beside them are monsters of 680 H. P. The parachute, curiously fashioned by Mile. Poitevin and which she used for 35 landings between 1851 and 1869, is one of the most interesting relics, for it is sufficiently good today to be used again. The rear-cabin of the German Zeppelin L-113, brought down in France after being blown from its course by storms on a bombardment mission to England, is one of the few war relics.
