CONVENIENCE IS ASSURED DRIVER OF 192UUICK Controls Readily Accessible Without Reaching or Leaning in Car. \ In introducing its sixteeen models for 1928, the Buick Motor Company presents an array of refinements which have seldom, if ever, been equalled, except by Buick. The improved six-cylinder valve-ln-head engine, with the noiseless and vibrationless flow of power which made it the talk of the world last year, the new and captivating bodies Fisher, and the new Buick vogue in interior treatment—these are only a part of the story. Everything Convenient Everything is conveniently placed In the new Buick driving compartment. All controls are readily accessible without reaching or leaning. Lights are centralized on the top of the steering post, where a single switch not only regulates them, but turns, them on and off. At the junction of the steering post and dash is the new Buick twoway lock, devised as a protection against theft. By means of it the ignition and the steering wheel may both be locked, but it is ingeniously designed to prevent locking of the wheel by the mere act of shutting off the ignition. Instruments Grouped The Buick driver may cut off his engine and coast without losing steering control, but he cannot lock the wheel while the engine is running, On the Buick dash, which is simplified by transfer of the light controls to the steering post, the instruments are grouped in three Ijandsome small panels, clustered within a larger panel. Ammeter, oil gauge, speedometer, gasoline gauge and water thermometer comprise the group, that can be §een at a single glance. Wheel Fits Any Hand Driving seats in the flve-pas-senger, two-door sedan of series 115 and the roomy five-passenger coupe of series 128 may be moved one inch forward or backward from the central position, by means of a simple adjustment. Still another improvement is the adjustable steering post, which may be raised or lowered to suit the driver’s individual requirements. In deference to the thousands of women who drive Buicks, Buick engineers have originated a steering wheel which will appeal to the small hand, as well as to the large. The new wheel is designed to fill any hand comfortably, making prolonged drives possible without fatigtlC' 0 ‘Sixth For Roads One-sixth of the entire public budget, or $1,500,000,000, was spent during the fiscal year ended June, 1925, for the upkeep and building of rads and highways in the United States.

Here’s the new 1928 Buick Coupe, which is drawing much attention In automobile circles.

Tail Light

BY SWEDE SWANSON Consider the traffic cop broiling under the hot sun. Stand as he does for hours, even doing nothing, and see how you like it. It makes a fellow hot under the collar, especially since he has,/ to remain dressed up to uphold the dignity of the city. So we shouldn t be surprised to draw a cuss-word or two out of him if we happen to break a traffic, rule or delay other machines. If we thought of the man and his difficulties, our own would fade in the distance. We would try to cooperate with the traffic police, to keep close along with traffic especially during the busy hours and avoid the slightest infringement of the motoring code. That would help our nerves, too. in this warm weather. It’s bad enough to be hot naturally, let alojie raising our temperature and that of others by inexcusable driving mistakes. The Detroit Automobile Club is saving quite a few punctures for Detroit’s motorists. The club’s “glass patrol” gathers broken glass off the streets after accidents. In three months the patrol figures it has picked up four tons of glass. Carefully compiled figures show that 18 per cent of the car-owning families in the United States own more than one car, according to Edward S. Jordan, president of the Jordan Motor Car Company. A pleasant week-end trip to Bass Lake is suggested by the touring department of the Hoosier Motor Club. The best route is, as follows: From Indianapolis proceed north on road No. 31 through Broad Ripple, Carmel, Westfield, Kokomo, Peru to seven miles north of Rochester Turn left and follow the Hunting-ton-Manitau-Culver trail (marked (HMC) to Culver; thence west on No. 10 to Bass lake. This route figures 130 miles and the road is paved the first 101 miles. Beyond this point the highway is graveled and reported in fair to good condition. You will have to worry along without Tail Light for the next three weeks as the writer is going to spend a‘'little time on Klinger Lake, Michigan, much to the disgust of the fish there, we hope. Many Weak Eyes Since January 1, about 15 per cent of the 24,000 applicants for automobile driver’s licenses in Trenton, N. J., have been found to have defective eyesight. Spain Runs Oil A State monopoly of petroleum and its derivatives in Spain has been decreed It is designed to reduce, as well as regulate, the price of oil.

NEW CHRYSLER MOTOR IS OUT High Compression Engine May Revolutionize Industry. Anew high compression engine which it is redicted will completely alter the public’s understanding of motor car performance is announced by the Chrysler Corporation. This new engine, to be known as the Chrysler “Red-Head”—the head will be painted a vivid red color to distinguish it—makes it possible for the Chrysler car owner to take advantage of the greater power-pro-ducing elements of high compression fuels. For several years, high compression engines and fuels have been in use on racing automobiles but due to the inadequate distribution of this particular fuel it has not been practical to use high compression in automobiles for general service. The principle of high compression is easily understood. The tighter you pack the powder charge in a muzzle loading gun the greater the force given the bullet. Similarly, the tighter gasoline vapor and air are compressed in the combustion chamber—the space between the top of the cylinder and the top of the piston—before ignition, the greater the power from the explosion. It is a fundamental fact that the amount of power which can be obtained from gasoline increases as the compression of the motor is raised. Consequently with engines of higher compression a considerable increase in fuel economy is noticeable. The Chrysler "Red-Head” engine is available to all owners of Chrysler six-cylinder cars produced since July, 1925.
