COOLIDGE STAR IN PAGEANT OF OLD GOLD DAYS President Pans Gold With Aged Prospector; Gets Little Lucre. By United Press CUSTER, S. D., July 27—President Coolidge was the “star” of the pageant staged here today to commemorate discovery of gold in 1874. The chief executive impersonated Horace N. Ross, member of General Custer’s party which came into the Black Hills more than fifty years ago to trace Indian rumors that the precious metal might be found in the hill creeks. „ Mr. Coolidge, who came here from the State game lodge tor the celebration, met Frank Herbert on French creek, at the edge of town, and saw the old prospector “dish” gold from the .stream. Then he took the pan himself and, while Mrs. Coolidge looked on laughingly, * dipped it into the creek. The President did not get much gold, but Herbert did, and a small phial of it was presented to Mr. Coolidge. Sioux Indians were present from the near by reservation —passive descendants of those who, in similar costume, besieged the little stockade on French Creek and scalped women and children. Shows Old Gold Rush The show was designed to reveal, through 300 characters, how General Custer led his troops out here in 1874 to investigate rumors of Indians that creeks of gold flowed down from the hills; to typify clamor at the time of the gold discovery and rush to this territory; blood-curdling combats between rustic whites and Ifidians who resented their coming into this sacred Sioux hunting ground; and, finally, establishment of the town of Custer. Rentier life with stage coaches, social events, establishment of cattle ranches, round-ups and other Western scenes were included. Many Pioneers Present There are many old people still here who came out to this spot twelve miles from the summer White House in ’76 and ’BO, and to them the event held keen interest. While local newspapers describe Custer as a “bustling little city,” it is not much changed from early days and there still are many buildings on Main St. which look like houses in cow towns of wild west movies. President and Mrs. Coolidge motored here for the two-hour show and returned to the game lodge immediately thereafter. Some 15,000 persons attended. DOCTORS TO ATTEND BERNE GOITER CLINIC Moschelle and Gifford In Party ' Making European Trip. Dr. J. D. Moschelle and Dr. F. E. Gifford of Indianapolis sailed from new York on the President Roosevelt today with a party of surgeons to visit goiter clinics in Europe and attend the international congress on goiter at Berne, Switzerland. Dr. J. L. Wilson of South Bend and Dr. J. R. Young of Terre Haute, are also in the party. At Berne the surgeons will attend the clinic of Dr. Emil Theodor Kocher, known as the father of goiter surgery, who won the Nobel prize for medicine in 1909. He has been director of the Berne surgical clinic since 1872 and is the author of several scholarly works on surgery. The American doctors plan side trips to other leading European cities and will return In September. GIVEN VALUABLE BOOK , i Times Library Receives Copy of Nowland’s History. The Times library has received a valuable copy of “Prominent Citizens of 1876,” by John H. B. Nowland, first Indianapolis historian of note, from Edwin R. Nowland, 1204 W. Washington St., a son. The book was printed in 1877 and the edition has been practically unobtainable for years. One of the last wishes of the late Mr. Nowland was that the Times, News and Star libraries have complete ’ sets of his historical works for the benefit of posterity, and the son, by virtue of patient search in bookstores here and in surrounding cities, gradually is fulfilling the behest.
