0. A. R. FADES. TO THIN LINE OF |T SMALL POSTS Bluffton, Ind., Is Latest to Give Up Charter; Largest In Indianapolis. Indiana's once numerically strong Grand Army of the Republic has faded to a thin blue line and posts that flourished a decade ago have shrunk to memberships as small as three or five of the aged veterans. Post 33, Bluffton, Ind., is the latest to surrender its charter according to records at the office of Adjutant Albert J. Ball at the Statehouse. The post had thirty-three members, which is considered a goodly number, but they decided to disband and surrender their charter. Largest Post Here Indianapolis boasts the largest post from the standpoint of membership. It is No. 17, and has 126 members. Other local posts run from 102 to forty members. Terre Haute has fifty-six; Ft. Wayne, eighty-eight; Evansville, sixty-six; and Anderson forty-six. There are scores of posts, however, ‘where the three or five members religiously pay their dues, hold their charter and carry on. Under the original organization table there are twelve officers for each post. In these that have reached the vanishing point, only the offices of post commander, adjutant and quartermaster are retained. Not More Than Five The list of posts with membership of not more than five includes the following towns: Atwell, N. Vernon, Waterloo, Geneva, Jeffersonville, Worthington, Kentland, Pikes Peak, Rockport, Rushville, Crown Point, Knightstown, Cambridge, Kewaunee, Liberty, Hillsboro, Fulton, Cicero, Centerville, Hebron, Wakarusa, Newtonville, Lewis, Acton, JLynn, Sullivan, Meron, Clinton, Napanee, Upland, Jonesboro, Henryville, Rensselaer, Kendallville, Nashville, Parkersburg, South Bend and Brook.

Indianapolis Boys and Girls Scan Library Shelves to Solve Mysteries. “Boxes of pearls and heaps of gold!" ' | Where are they? The only clew given is; “‘You may find them in the house of an old witch who was pushed into a furnace!" This is one of many mysteries which are being explored by Indianapolis boys and girls at the library this summer. They find the treasure when they find the right book. And if you’ve ever looked over all the shelves in the children’s division at the Indianapolis library, you know that it is just about like hunting for a needle in a haystack. Many Find Them Nevertheless, these “Treasure Hunt” mysteries are beirig solved daily. Miss Carrie Scott, superintendent of children’s work at the library, who originated the plan, stated that 1,847 children are already enrolled in the treasure hunt. Ninety-eight already have found ten treasures each. “There was a time not so many years ago," Miss Scott said, “when the children’s librarian looked forward terthe summer months as a time to get done all the things ac-

cumulating during the rush of heavy circulation and reference work connected with school activities. Just to Keep Busy “Books could .be cleaned and mended, inventory taken, reading lists compiled and other advance work done. “That time, however, belongs to the past. The wise librarian realiezs that children enjoy reading In summer even more than in winter,, for during these vacation months the child may satisfy his own whims and read for the pure joy of read-, ing. No school task impels him. He may read just as much or as little as he pleases. “These little contests are the results of this realization. If nothing else, they at least teach the child to read closely and- not to skim through books, as many so children have a tendency to do.”
