STOCKS BREAK IN LATE TRADE AT NEW YORK Money Easy, Brokerage Loans Decreased, but Reaction Comes Before Close.
Average Stock Prices
Average of twenty Industrials Thursday was 177.75, off .08. Average of twenty rails was 138.73. off .17. Average of forty bonds was 07.10, unchanged. Bu Vnited Press NEW YORK, July 22.—Despite easier money conditions and a decrease in brokerage loans, stock prices broke in late dealings today afieV moving about in an indecisive fashion. Commission * houses broadcast a warning to their clients that the market was overbulled, and said the time to take profits was now. The heavy liquidation forced re-, cent leaders to slump several points from their highs fdP the day, the decline extending to all sections of the general list. General Motors -slipped off about '3 points from a newly established high of 216V2. Later, however, Motors recovered most of the losses on good support. General Electric slippped off more than 2 points, as did Union Carbide, Allied Chemical and United States Cast Iron Pipe, Manhattan Electric Supply flutuated in a hectic manner, touching anew high of 108, and then falling off to 99, later recovering to around 104. Rails Slip Off Lehigh Valley led the reaction in the rails with a slump of about 6 points. Texas & Pacific was off about 2, while Erie fluctuated in a hectic manner, touching anew high of 108, and then falling off to 99, later recovering to around 104. Describing the market, the Wall Street Journal’s financial review today said: Reactionary tendencies • became quite pronounced today. Profit-tak-ing and professional selling grew in volume following a bad break in Houston Oil, and followed by a sharp run-up in Manhattan Electrical Supply. Industrials Down These gyrations caused some interests to retire from the market in the belief that technical conditions were temporarily impaired,. This liquidation coupled with active floor operations for the decline, started a slip-off among the industrial leaders which attained considerable momentum by early afternoon. However, the set-back at no time threatened to get out of hand. It was generally acknowledged that the general list stood in need of technical correction, but the ease of money, prevented bearish operations from gaining headway. Comfortable conditions prevailing in the credit market were additionally accentuated by the opening of call money at 3% per cent. This was the first time that renewals had been arranged below 4 per cent since June 17, 1926. No surprise was occasioned by this development in view of the advance in the reserve ratio of the local Federal bank to 88 per cent, up 4.1 per cent from the preceding period.

(By Thomson Sc McKinnon) NEW YORK, July 21.—Price cutting in the market for actual sugar has added to the unsettlement of the general situation. Future prices are irregular, influenced bv the undoing of hedges. Lower prices for futures, however. haVe the effect of attracting outside demand. Today will be the last day for the trading in July. Further declines are an invitation for investment buying.

Rockefeller Firms Differ Over Purchase of Petroleum From Russia. Bn Vnited Press NEW YORK, July 22.—The happy family of the American oil industry —tlse Standard Oil Companies and their subsidiaries—this week apparently have been split wide open by a controversy over purchase of petroleum products from Soviet Russia, and far ranching consequences were predicted in financial circles. The dispute was precipitated Wednesday, when Standard Oil of New Jersey issued a statement saying it would have no business dealings with Russia until that country recognized private property rights and arranged indemnities ‘for oil properties seized after the Communist revolution. The statement by inference criticised Standard Ojl of New York and the Vacuum Oil Company, both known, like standard of New Jersey, ‘‘Rockefeller companies,” for their dealings with the Soviet. The statement particularly re-

(By Thomson Sc McKinnon) NEW YORK, July 21.—The bears can loose all their amunition over night by a change in the weather, but if everything else fails, the bulls still have the 12 per cent acreage reduction to fall back on. Take the ten year average, jpx even the highest condition In the last ten years, and try to figure anything bearish out of it. It can’t be done. ferred to the inadvisability of buying Russian oil while overproduction in this country presented a serious probleem to the industry. Officials of Standard of New York and Vacuum did not conceal their surprise over the statement, and it was understood both would issue statements clarifying their position. The officials defended their transactions, pointing out that oil purchased from Russia was used in Europe and did not affect the American overproduction. Russia already has made arrangements for indemnifying the companies for seized properties, it was said. The officials also pointed out that it had been widely understood that Standard of New Jersey was associated with the Royal Dutch-Shell Oil group in Europe in purchase of Russian oil in 1924. The European group later broke off business relations with Russia and in some quarters an alliance of Standard of New Jersey and Royal Dutch-Shell against Standard of New York and Vacuum was forecast. The Rockefeller interests have always been supposed to have dominated both Standard of New Jersey, Standard of New York and Vacuum, although technicajly there Is no connection between the companies. Heretofore they have worked in harmony, seldom stepping into each other's fields.
