AUTO EXPERTS LAUD 4-WHEEL BRAKETHEORY E. T. Strong and G. C. Maxwell Quoted As Favoring Widespread Use. With an unusual amount of attention being centered on claims that the employment of 4-wheel brake equipment on all cars would reduce the number of accidents and aid in moving traffic more speedily to relieve congestion, proponents of the 4-wheel brake theory cite statements of E. T. Strong, president of Buick Motors and G. C. Maxwell, formerly a director of Chrysler. In the April 7 issue of Printers’ Ink, Strong is quoted as follows: Fears Dissipated “Four-wheel brakes were every bit , as revolutionary as electric starting. People in general, even including automotive engineering experts, were frankly dubious about their practicability. We all remember the prediction that the quick stopping which the brakes made possible, would Inevitably cause many accidents in traffic. Automobile owners and prospects not knowing the fourwheel brake principle were frankly against it. “Within twelve months after the first public mention was made of four-wheel brakes, they were standard equipment in substantially et'ery car made that sold for above sl,ooo.’’ British Demand Maxwell, in the March 25 issue of the Wall Street Journal, speaking of the British public, is quoted as saying: “Our British sales are up 100 per cent on last season. The most popular Chrysler model here is the ‘7o.’ Demand for the new four-cylinder ‘so’ is very poor, due to the fact that the four-wheel breaking system is not included in the equipment. Today prospective buyers lose all interest in a car when they find that four-wheel brakes are not supplied. So much for the inconsistency of not placing four-wheel brakes on the ‘so.’ ” States to Improve Roads Nearly $180,000,000 is available in eleven Western States for construction and maintenance of highways during the next year. California expects to spend more than a third of this.

This interesting picture shows many pieces of metal picked up in five months by the tires of several railway busses in Cleveland, Ohio. They ranged from tiny tacks to a nine-inch length of spring leaf, proving that the streets still are full of things that are dangerous to tires.

Tail Light

BY SWKDF SWAWCON There is less liability of theft, when parking a car unlocked in a residential neighborhood, than there is danger to life and property. Here children are playing. Where there is no playground, or plots large enough for their fun, they romp about the streets. They have seen their fathers start their cars and manipulate the controls. All they have to do is get into the car and do likewise. A car unlocked is an invitation to their mischief. All one need to do is turn the switch, fumble around with the clutch petal and gear lever, and somehow or other the car will suddenly jerk forward. It has been done, at the cost of children’s lives. It should be prevented by keeping the car locked. If it’s a closed car, the body too should be locked. For the car may be on an inoline and all a child need do in this case to make it dangerous to life is release the emergency brake. ‘ It taks a little extra effort to turn a key. Two letters were received this week by the writer commenting on last week’s tail light. Both were anonymous. The first was typewritten and was very complimentary in that the sender praised the article as being well written and giving good sound advice to speeders, but ended by saying, ‘Lest you forget to remember how about an unsuccessful attempt you made to turn East Washington St., into a speedway.” In other words, I should practice what I preach.

The other letter took exception to the Hoosier Motor Club’s suggestion that three short toots when passing a motorist, means a flat tire. Here is his letter. What do you think of “Mr. Motorist’s” idea of 4 toots? “Three blasts from a locomotive engine has always meant Back up, and is used very frequently when a motorist wants to back out of a parking place or off a crossing when stopped by a traffic man. Why confuse the signals because someone in Montana did it. Four blasts would sound more natural to call attention as it is a signal for protection or a flagman at rear. Why not standardize. U. Tellem, A Motorist, Ex-Brass Pounder.”

Seth Klein will leave early in September for the West, where he will endeavor to shoot an elk. Before going he will attend the I. A. T. A. clambake. The Minnesota State Supreme Court has decided that parking without lights at night renders the owner liable if injury results from a collision. By this ruling, the driver of a car running into a truck without warning light on it recovered damages. The province of Quebec this year will spend $10,000,000 for construction and maintenance of good roads. More than half will be spent for new paving. We assume that our readers will be pleased to learn that the Indianapolis Auto Trade Association have again signed a lease on the Automobile Building at the fairground for one week in February, covering our 1928 Spring show. The exact date of the show will be announced later. The Crysler Sales Corporation announces the return of W. J. Mattimore to his former post as Director of Advertising on July 5. OIL FILTER IS MONEYSAVER Amount* of Abrasive Matter in Oil Reduced. An oil filter is important, first as a protector and second as a measure of economy. Asa protection it has been found that as an average 7-100 to 10-100 per cent of abrasive matter accumulates in the oil in 500 miles of driving and accumulates at this same ratio if the oil is not changed, so that at 1,000 miles the abrasive would be from 14-100 to 20-100 of the oil. With an oil filter installed the abrasive will accumulate fiom a trace to 1-100 to 2-100 per cent in 500 miles and by only adding oil and changing at 3,000 miles, the abrasive content has been found to never average more than 3-100 to 4-100. Thus, the abrasive is reduced from one-fifth to one-tenth of what it would be without an oil filter and the wear on the bearings, pistons, cylinder walls, rings, etc., is reduced in proportion. Asa direct economy, the ability to use the oil for 3,000 miles or more, without having to change it, spells considerable saving in oil expense.

AUTO BUILDERS OFFERSERVICE Success Found to Depend on Upkeep Facilities. DETROIT, July 20.—A new era is dawning in automotive merchandising. Service is being sold, rather than Just automobiles. The entire industry is stressing it’s activities in this direction, says B. H. Cram, president of Cram's Automotive Reports. As the industry comes closer and closer to a point of standardization, service looms up as the most important factor. service departments in many factories are being enlarged, both at the plants and in the field. Campaigns are being planned to educate the selling organizations in the importance of service and also to further increase service connections. Much thought is being given to ways and means of holding down parts costs, so that “genuine” parts will be handled in place oi those manufactured by other companies. Henry Ford realized the importance of this factor many years ago, and. it was largely because of the fact that Ford parts and service were obtainable, at minimum costs, in every part of the country that Ford production was able to climb from 195 automobiles in 1903 to 2,090,959 in 1923, his peak year. And it is on service that Henry Ford is going to largely rely, follow-
