•REDUCTION IN VALUATION ON FARMS URGED Verbal Bout by William Settle, Philip Zoercher Marks Tax Board Hearing. Twenty-five per sent reduction on Indiana farm revaluations was urged by President William Settle of the Indiana Farm Bureau Federation and other organization leaders at a public hearing today before the State tax board. Statistics of farm sales were presented, showing in each case how sale prices were less than present assessed valuation. At one poipt during the hearing, Settle engaged in a hot argument with Philip Zoercher, Democratic member of the tax board. Saved Tax Board “You didn’t get behind and support this board when we needed legislative aid in passing real remedial tax regulations,” Zoercher accused. Settle leaped to his feet and pounding the table shouted: “Let us have the truth here. Had it not been for the farm organization and the aid we extended Bkhrough our lobby the tax board have been abolished entirely. There was plenty of legislators in the proper mood for such action.” Oil on Troubled Waters Tax Board Chairman John J. Brown came to the rescue and pouring the oil on conversation of the troubled waters of argument brought the incident to a close. The meeting then proceeded uneventfully. Brown stated at the close that decision wduld be reached regarding revaluation as soon as possible in order to aid county auditors in making books. He declared that it had not been decided whether a blanket reduction of a certain percentage applying to all farm land would be arrived at by the board or local revaluations made in each of the ninety-two counties. State Officials Attend Governor Jackson, State Auditor L. S. Bowman and former Governor James P. Goodrich attended the hearing. Besides Settle, farm bureau representatives included Secretary L. L. Needier, J. H. Gwaltney, Poseyville; P. C. Engle, Pulaski county; Representative Addison Drake, Sullivan county; Earl Crawford and Everett Hunt, Wayne county.
