!All for Friendship’ Is Excuse of Lantern Man
And Prison Sentence Is Suspended Because of New Baby. Anew born baby, a red lantern, an alarm clock, and a “Damon and Pythias” story of friendship were the elements of a tale told Municipal Judge Paul C. Wetter Thursday. William J. Kline, 35, of 1155 Engdry hole, in Daviess, Vigo, Knox and Pike counties. Joseph Flesher, Indianapolis, local superintendent of the field, is here. L. A. Painter, Pittsburgh, Pa., will arrive shortly to take active charge af development work. The last of the leases in the block taken on land north and east of here has been recorded and other preparations for drilling completed.
lish Ave., was carrying a red lantern and an alarm clock the night of June 24, when he was arrested at Pine and Harrison Sts., near the Pennsylvania freight yard, Motorcycle Officer Englebright testified. He had stolen the lantern from the freight yard and the clock from the yard office, the policeman continued. How it Happened Then Kline told his story. A friend, whom he knew only as Frank, and who worked in the freight yards, had been drinking and had a large bottle of liquor, he said. He didn’t want the friend to get arrested, so he took the bottle from him. Frank gave him the alarm clock and lantern. “So you staged a Damon and Pythias stunt?” asked Judge Wetter. "Well, I don’t know what that is, Judge, but I didn’t want Ftank to get arrested,” said Kline. And then he told the rest of his stoty. He couldn’t go to jail because last Wednesday his wife gave birth to a baby girl. She was at home and needed him. Sentence Suspended Judge Wetter gave him suspended sentences and fines on intoxication and petit larceny charges, ordered him to report to Probation Officer Laurel Thayer six months and sent him home. “I’m going to make anew start in life for my daughter’s sake,” Kline, with tears in his eyes, told Miss Thayer. “A year ago our only child, a boy, 3, was killed in front of our home. He had climbed on the running board of a doctor’s parked car. The doctor came out and didn’t notice him. He fell under the wheels as the car started off.” MINE HOSPITAL URGED ) Welfare Nurse Plans Workers’ Institution in Oklahoma. PICHER, Okla., July 15.—Ottawa County zinc and lead miners will have a tubercular hospital of their own if plans of Mrs. Bobbie Joseph, welfare nurse of the American Zinc Institute, mature. Ottawa commissioners offered a site for the institution and 8,000 mine employes in the tri-State district have indorsed the plan.
