LONG DISTANCE FORECAST SAYS STORMSCOMING Herbert Brown Predicting Hurricanes and Cold Summer. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, July 14.—Long distance weather forecasting is past the stage of experiment and is now an actuality, according to Herbert Brown, noted weather forecaster. Not only can rain, snow and hail storms be forecast far in advance of their occurrence, but the location and approximate time of hurricanes, tornadoes and cyclones can be given, Brown says. On Jan. 15, this year, Brown issued a special forecast warnings against cold waves which swept across the country a month later, and for the unusually heavy rains which devastated crops and caused flood conditions in sections of Pacific coast and southwestern States. Expects Big Hurricane Following a year filled with weather calamities, many of which Brown prophesied months before they occurred, he says now the peculiar fluctuations of solar radiation, caused by the sun reaching the Maximum sun spot period, will on some of the worst hurricanes in history. $ According to his calculations, Brown said the slight retraction northward of the Azorean cold area, an oceanic body of cold water, will cause a similar movement northward of what is known as the “thirty-inch isobar of barometrical pressure.” This shifting of one of the great ocean bodies of cold water and area of great barometric pressure over the West Indies will have the effect of increasing rainfall. "There should be a notable lessening of the drought conditions so marked in Porto Rico the past year, as well as an increase in the rainfall of the Virgin Islands, in Haiti and in Cuba,” Brown said. “There is also the threat of a rise in the number of tropical storms influenced in part by the movement northward of the isobar and in part by the expected trend in the sun spots toward their maximum near the end of 1927.” Cold Summer Due Brown forecasted several years ago that 1927 would “witness a return to the conditions of 1816, historically known as the year without a summer.” He now warns that even semitropical countries will not escape cold weather this summer. “It should be borne in mind,” he says, “that there is a probability of low temperatures in Cuba, as was notably the case in 1816.” The driving southward from Greenland and Labrador of a constream of icebergs, one of most notable ever recorded, continuing through the entire summer, and even late into November, 1926, was responsible, in part, for the unusual change in temperatures and weather conditions in the West Indies and the adjacent areas, indicated already in the unusual sweep of the cold waves of Spring as far south as these points, he said.

"| E WILL now take up breathing in the crawl stroke form of swimVY/ ming. When you are able to take a few double-arm strokes withVV out a let-up, proceed to practice breathing. It will be easy if you have practiced the breathing exercise given you in the first lesson. Firs' - , try a few more strokes and find out on which side it is easier for you to roll, as that will be your natural side for inhaling. Follow the customary procedure, push off, stretch out, set the legs in motion by rapid thrashing, sweep down and back with the arm on the side you have chosen for inhaling. When this arm nears the thigh apply pressure with the other arm, immediately twisting the head and rolling the body toward the first arm, now emerging from the water. As the first arm moves forward above the surface, take a quick, deep breath. Then, as the second arm completes its drive, press down with the first, twist the head back to normal position, roll back flat, and exhale through the nostrils under the water, holding the head straight, while the arms glide forward in recovery. To help you in breathing look upward while rolled on the side. That will help raise the mouth clear of the water. Practice this faithfully so as to have little difficulty in the breathing. NEXT: Arm action in the crawl.
Indianapolis Art Instructors Play Important Part in Summer School in Session At Lake Winona
Instructors of the John Herron Art Institute of Indianapolis are playing an important part in the summer school at Winona Lake which has students enrolled from many States. Former students of the art institute have entered the art classes at Winona for further practice and instruction. On Thursday July 28, at the institute in this city, many sketches made by the students at Winona will be on view. The gesso panels by Frances Burr, now shown in Gallery 11 here, are glowing mosaics of color in high key. Vermilion, cobalt veridian and orange with stirring accents of gold and silver and black are used. Laid on plaster as they are, these pigments have a distinction of quality and texture that is imparted by the substance on which they rest. “Painting on the walls” produces an effect that cannot be gained in any other way. strictly speaking, a decorated gesso panel is not a “painting on the wall” but the panels have a plaster surface, in common and it is the surface that is felt through the substance of the paint. The designs, executed in relief before pigment is applied, are arranged and massed with a definite simplicity, but are carried out with an elaboration of detail that is bewilderingly complicated. Defining and intensifying this detail, and at the same time cleverly focusing the interest, the clear, bright colors and the gleaming gold and silver make a vivid pattern. In the several panels where caravels, full-rigged, appear, Miss Burr has painted the sails in tones of rose and orange that glow against the green skies and blue waters. She uses effective pinks and lavenders for rocks and hills and soft clear yellow and rose and gray for the walled castles that crown the rocky slopes. In the “Battle of Hastings” series the silver foil used on the armor of the soldiers,—literally hundreds of them—is pre-eminently important in the composition. The bright spotting of the shields and the clear, crude reds and blues and purples of the tents are also striking items in a vivid pattern. One of the •panels in the “Battle of Hastings” is devoted to the hilltop overlooking the scene of conflict and on this hill are members of the clergy and of the royal houses gathered to look down upon the fray. In this group are a young woman and a little boy, gayly clad like the rest, but with a modem cut to their clothes that is unmistakable. At the woman’s feet is a splash of color that is nothing less than a palette with pigments in a spectrum ranged around its rim. Here then are the artist and her small son. The battle interests them, and so they mingle with the other onlookers. The tools that brought the gay scene into being are laid aside and

the two stand deeply absorbed in this creation of the artist’s brain and hand. NEW SHOW AT THE PALACE TODAY “Dancefoolery” presented by Hickand “The Enchanted Forest,” the ey, Massart and Williard Singley latest of mystical novelties staged by Les Klicks are sharing headline honors at the Palace theater the last half of this week. Hickey and Massart specialize in their eccentric dances but they also give time to songs and talk of the comedy kind. Les Klicks have an art that is full of black magic. Animated forms of all kinds are electrically projected onto a darkened background. These forms take the shape of the goose that laid the golden eggs, the boxing frogs, teddy bears, dancing ducks, the goblin man, the magic tree, the uncanny cats, and the spider and the fly. Other monstrosities of the make-believe worll will be shown. The Two Harlequins are athletes who appear in the Harlequin garb, offering their original entertainment of art, grace, and flexibility. They have a routine of artistic postures and a bit of silent humor. Lee and Burt Ryan are said to be favorites of the Fun Family with their song and patter entitled “Hokum ala Carte.” Brown and Rogers present “Vaudeville Tid Bits.” Johnny Harron and
