M’CARDLE ON ‘ DEFENSIVE i ROANOKE ROW Citizens Want Commissioner Ousted Because of Rate Advice.

Commissioner John W. McCardle’s letter to the citizens of Roanoke, which caused them to halt a petition before the public service commission for reduced electric rates, didn’t mean what it says. Thus McCardle, veteran of the commission and former chairman, attempted to explain away the agitation which has resulted in a letter being received at Governor Jackson's office today urging that the Governor ask for McCardle’s resignation. The letter was from irate citizens of Roanoke. It stated that when they petitioned for reduced electric rates from the Indiana Service Corporation, McCardle wrote them that the burden of proof would be on them and that they would have to pay SIOO or more for an appraisal and audit of the company books. Learning this, they withdrew their efforts. Now the citizens learn that all such costs are actually borne by the utility concerned unIjer the Spenser-Shivley act. | “My letter was all right, but it didn’t explain detail,” McCardle said today. “I mean’t that they would have to pay the cost of hearing because all such expense Is borne indirectly by the rate payers.”
