MELLON TAKES HIS FIRST REAL RESTINJEARS Somewhere on Mediterranean, With Family; Secretary Forgets Business. Bu United Prcaa WASHINGTON, July 14.—Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Mellon, the hardest working official of the government, is taking his first real vacation in years. Somewhere on the Mediterranean Sea, Mellon with his family, Mr. and Mrs. David E. K. Bruce and his son, Paul, are on the yacht Valencia visiting old ports and just drift- ’ lng. Mellon has taken a vacation every year, but usually he combines business with pleasure. On his previous trips abroad he visited statesmen of foreign nations and discussed financial problems. This trip is for pleasure only. Holds Family Reunion The Secretary decided on the' Mediterranean voyage in order to have a family reunion to avoid process serving and to rest. daughter, Mrs. Bruce, has been V Paris and Rome for several years where her husband has been assigned in consular service and his son, Paul, has been away at college. The 73-year-old financial wizard, virtually alone in the world, living alone in Washington, planned the trip to become re-acquainted with his children. Then, too, Mellon is one of the most sued men in the country. Being a millionaire, and a federal official in charge of the government’s finances, he is bombarded with damage suits of every description. Never in Jail Yet Recently when a process server called at his office he welcomed the man with a smile and remarked “another one.” Then he laughingly said “I get these summons about once a week, but they haven’t got me in jail yet.” Mellon said his vacation this year would be-the best he has taken since he was a young man and toured Scotland by coach. On that trip he explained, he rode through Scotland atop a coach, stopping at inns each night and sightseeing en route. OIL FIELDS TO NAVY Arrangements for Transfer of Reserves Made. Bu United Press July 14.—Plans ■r administration and control of all naval oil reserves by the Navy Department instead of the Interior Department have been made by Secretary of Navy Wilbur and Secretary of Interior Work. The agreemeent announced today is in keeping with the executive order of President Coolidge which transferred the reserves back to the Navy Department after the oil investigation and subsequent suits. The reserves were transferred to the Interior Department in 1921 in an executive order by President Harding which was followed by former Secretary of Interior Fall’s leasing of Teapot Dome reserve, Wyoming, to Harry F. Sinclair and the Elk Hills reserve, California, to E. L. Doheny. * SOUTH NOW RAISING TOO MANY PEACHES Jardine Warns Growers Market May Be Crowded. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, July 14.—The southern peach industry faces a period of over production because oi heavy planting of peach orchards during the last few years, Secretary of Agriculture Jardine warns. . Growers are faced with the necessity of letting many trees go out of bearing or meet intense competition in overcrowded markets, he said. “The Agriculture Department recommends improved cultural prac■fces and strict grading to improve mie condition. Such action, accompanied by the removal of trees which constantly produce low yields or inferior varieties would be a benefit both to individual growers and to the industry as a whole,” he continued. CHARGE PASTE GEM SALE James Trotto Is Held; Faces Grand Larceny Trial. James Trotto, 31, Detroit, Mich., is in city jail today facing charges of grand larceny as a result of his alleged sale of paste diamonds to Edward Du Baise on June 1. Trotto admitted to detectives he sold the stones after they were switched for the good ones. City detectives under Chief of Detectives Worley traced Trotto’s activities in Detroit and then notified Detroit police to arrest him. Detective Charles Jordan returned with Trotto Wednesday moring.
