Gregory Kelly

With a memory of his work with Stuart Walker at the Murat and with only himself at the head of his own company at English’s and as a visiting star with and at the head of his own company on tour at' English's—that's the fine record of Gregory Kelly, who died in New York Saturday night.

THEATER-GOERS MOURNJELLY Gifted Young Actor Praised for Work Here. By Walter D. Hickman In the memory of those who go to the theater in this city there is that thought that Gregory Kelly might have become the force that brings people into the theater. It is unfortunate that anyone so gifted has to pass from the stage unto death. The fact is, few knew that he was ill. We had in Kelly one of those troubled and nervous mental attributes of life which went in new paths. I remember him very well trying to do a most gigantic thing—a bit from “Romeo and Juliet” while doing stock in this city at- English’s. He struck anew keynote at that time—definite failure as to Shakespeare. But he gave pleasure and consummate artistry as to Tarkington. Stuart Walker brought this star into being. He opposed the genius of Walker in this city with a stock company. That is the trial of the business of the stage. But he gave that beauty to the stage which never knew defeat. Gregory Kelly kept on. He won. Funeral Riles Tuesday Bu United Press NEW YORK. July 11.—Funeral services for Gregory Kelly, actor, will be held at St. Malachi’s Church at 11 a. m. tomorrow. Kelly, widely known both along Broadway and in Eastern cities, where he had played on tour, died Saturday. The Indiana Bell Telephone Company reported no damage. Twelve Union Traction Company poles on the Newcastle line, near TwentyFirst St. and Emerson Ave., were blown down, but delay to traffic was slight. ‘ Fire, believed caused by lightning, did about SIOO damage to the roof of the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, Market and East Sts. SLAIN WOMEN'S BODIES STREWN OVERBROOKLYN Three Believed to Have Been Killed and Chopped to Bits in Cellar. Bit United Press BROOKLYN, N. Y., July 11.—Possibility that three women instead of two might have been murdered and dismembered in the cellar of a residence on Prospect PI. was considered by police today. Mrs. Mary De Martino of Brooklyn reported her daughter, Evelyn. 18, had not been seen since June 30, when she went to the Prospect PI. house to see a friend. Simultaneously, workmen at the B. M. T. subway yard at Fifth Ave. and Thirty-Seventh St., Brooklyn, found under a car a severed head, believed to be that of Mrs. Alfred Bennett, 48. one. of the murder victims. Besides Mrs. Bennett, the other known murder victim was Miss Sarah Elizabeth Brownell, 76, owner of the Prospect PI. house, which she operated as a rooming house. Bodies Strewn Over City The discovery of the head climaxed a long series of grevesome discoveries of parts of bodies in various sections of Manhattan and Brooklyn. First parts of a woman’s legs were found Saturday at the battery. New York. Sunday part of a thigh and back were discovered wrapped in a bedspread in shrubbery in a Brooklyn churchyard. Later more pieces of flesh and bone were found in an alley. Then police went into the cellar of the Prospect place house and discovered, in the blood-stained, flooded room, still more parts of bodies in ash cans. There was no doubt that at least two, and possibly three, women had been killed in the cellar. Their bodies were then hacked, sawed and cut to pieces, and attempts made to hide the crimes by spreading the dismembered bodies, a few pieces at a time, over New York. Carpenter Charged A knife, saw and ax were found in the cellar. Ludwig Lee, carpenter, is charged with homicide in connection with the deaths of Mrs. Bennett and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Brownell, 76. Today he told police he was engaged to be married to the latter woman. Lee, who came to this .country from Norway four years ago, denied any connection with the murders. He was part-time janitor and had a room in the house, where the murders occurred. She Proposed “Miss Brownell asked me to marry her shortly after I went to live at the house last May,” Lee said. “I told her I would. “I believe the old lady used dope," he said later, and at another point: “She always had men visiting her at the house.” He last saw her, Ire said, at 9 o’clock the night of July 4, the night she disappeared, she gave him sls and said she was going away, he said. Then, he asserted, she left and he did not see her again. Detectives charged it was that night that Lee killed the aged woman, probably to obtain money she was believed to have had with her. CITIZEN SOLDIERS TO START TWO-DAY HIKE Cadets Will March From Fort to Broad Ripple Park. Citizen soldiers at Ft.
