i Work Fills IThis Season for Mother ! V By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON The captain of the family souls, and incidentally of their bodily comfort during July and August, is, as you may know, a person known as mother. It takes more clothes for the family in summer—the girls need more fresh stockings, undies, and dresses, the boys need more shirts, and socks. Father, too, needs more of everything, for in summer he showers twice a day, and twice a day he steps into fresh linen. More Work And the towels and sheets and sundry! Beds must be changed oftener. Then everybody likes to sit down to a table with spick and span linen. It seems so much cooler when its surface presents that slick satiny finish that comes of much ironing while the linen is very damp. Tnere are iced drinks to be made, salads to be kept cool in the icebox until the very minute of eating,' 1 cool desserts to be made, and picnic

lunches. The very ham in the sandwiches usually means a day in a very hot kitchen, beforehand, for mother. Those crisp delicious little cakes mean a hot fire, too, and the icing a brisk beating. In plain words summer days mean little to mother but work, and more work. More sewing, more ironing," more cooking, more Don’t/say “but” to me. I’ve seen it a thousand, nay, thousands of times and I know. Mother just can’t make things easier for herself as you may suggest. It is up to the family to do that. Every girl, every boy, and father, too, should see to it that Mother’s summer is made more bearable by every little bit of help they can give her. Big hit too! “Mother’s day” is all very fine. Now let’s make it mother’s summer. New Purses Velvet pouch purses, in shades matching the velvet flat bows on summer hats of sheer braid, are the newest summer accessory. Women of Home Type Talk Least •BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON The question of sex equality has been argued pro artd con through the ages. • Today,'as has .been wisely said, most of the feminist talk, the rant’ing about the rights of women, is done by those who have not borne children, or not very many at least. In other words, -/the woman outside the home does most of the talking. It seems very obvious that the sexes are distinctly different. Their functions, their sensibilities, their ideals, their avocations, cannot be similar. Women are not and never can be like men, no matter how ardently they rtlay take up masculine work. Women Not Inferior But.this does not mean that they are not equal to men. It seems a foolish discrimination to insist that just because women were designed by nature to bear children and manage the home, this automatcally makes them inferior. Yet from this premise a great many pdbple argue their point. Notwithstanding the fact that the bearing and rearing of children is by all odds the most important of all work, still the person who does this has been faught to believe herself in some strange way beneath man. n
Perhaps this is the reason why the modern woman has rebelled so violently of late. She honestly beeves she can gain a higher status if she will prove to man that she can do his owrt work as well as he can. And yet, what will it profit us if we perform perfectly the work of the outside world and fall down on our own job? Children Desired \ The normal woman, even in this wild age, wants children, but- she w-ants them far less keenly because this female function has so long been looked doyn upon and because, by doing this task she not only incapacitates herself for a time from other work, but she is told that she is mentally incapable of doing other work. In giving up their birthright for a mess of pottage, women are making a mistake that not only affects them, but will affect the ages. However, one reason they themselves have come to put such a low r estimate on motherhood and home making is because it has been advertised as being of an inferior order. Once convince them otherwise, once stop talking about their inferiority, once see the truth that they are indeed equal, man and woman, each with a duty to perform, and perhaps we shall see the end of masculine women.

Woman ’s Day
By ALLENE SUMNER The old man who lives next door with three daughters confided over his yellow spice rose bush the other night that he got “so danged tired of women's talk” he journeyed afar today to hold with an old crony that sparse converse which is sweet to him. The old man next door does not mind telling a joke even when it’s on* himself, so he confided that said old crony wasn’t home, but “his women folks were, and when I came home I decided that my outfit weren’t .such cacklers, after all.” Cal and “Women Folks” I don’t know just why, but the old man’s confession reminded me that mighty representatives of the National Woman’s Party have journeyed in the wake of the President to the Black Hills region to talk before the down-trodden and oppressed women of that belt. What a rest Silent Cal will get! You’re

right, I’m not In total sympathy with that particular female organization. I deny that there are many male rights which we don’t have and should have, such as the special legislation report of the N. W. P. proves. But I maintain that women are women and men are men and the two never have been and never will be alike, and some discriminatory legislation is necessary and proper. Poppa Was Mad Here’s a thrilling story plot. The aged sacristan of one of the most storied old churches of Paris was playing its bells the other Sunday when wild discord suddenly arose. Investigation revealed that the sacristan had hanged himself to the clapper of the largest bell. He had threatened suicide because his daughter had bobbed her hair. Just another story to occasionally remind ourselves of the unbeautiful spirit of age which so often shows itself when age meets youth. If youth demonstrated such narrowness, such intolerance, such a de-
sire for cruel revenge for some little disapproved act of age, what a to-do there would be about youth —just as there is! The Man Waited After his wife had been gone for thirty-two years, Fred Hessler of Chicago, asked for a divorce. When the court asked hifn why he had waited so long before applying, he said that it was only of late that he had decided his wife Barbara was not coming back. When' one considers the universal woman record of long-time waiting for men, who never come back, the unique case of Fred Hessler seems only mete and proper.
