WILL REPLACE i BURNED BRIDGE Old Landmark Is Damaged by Flames. Construction of anew bridge over on the Wall St. pike, about® four and one-half miles northwest of Indianapolis, to replace the 60-year-old covered bridge that burned Wednesday afternoon probably will be started this fall, county commissioners announced today. The old structure, one of the four remaining covered bridges in the county, practically was demolished. Several boys swimming nearby said flames burst from the bridge roof. Firemen from Engine House No. 9 rigged up a pumper, but the structure toppled into the creek, before a hose could be directed on the flames. -Luther E. Tex, county road superintendent, who investigated, said the bridge can not be-rebuilt for less than $15,000, while anew concrete bridge can be erected for about SZO,OOO. The bridge was built from logs hewn by pioneer farmers in the civinity. Except for flooring, the bridge withstood the elements for three score years. tTex said repairs were made on the old structure, last week. -County Commissioner George Snider said if the bridge foundation is intact, it might be rebuilt to prepjerve it as a landmark. LAKEITiE ROCKS HAWAII Spectacular Volcanic Eruption May Last Months. Bv United, Press HILO, Island of Hawaii, July 7. Fountains of red lava leaping 300 feet through rolling clouds of dense steam and sulphurous fumes while subterranean explosions and hissing winds aoused the island, early today ushered in the long awaited eruption of Kilauea (Lake of Fire), the world’s most spectacular volcano. Beginning at 1 a. m. with a slight Earthquake and the appearance of 6 'fiery fountain in the bottom of the great pit, a mile across and a thousand feet deep, the eruption increased until at dstwn four jets of fire were covering the crater floor with lava. For days or even months, these streams of lava will continue their displays. The floor of the pit already is obscured, whirlpools are forming in the lava pot and a fifth fountain is forming, according to volcanologists stationed here. Meanwhile back in the jungles on the slopes of the volcano Mauna [Loa, old natives are gathering in huts, reviving ancient rites and wondering whether Madame Pele, Goddess of Fire, will demand a human sacrifice or permit Kilauea to ; erupt spectacularly but safely.
