rPARKS ATTRACT FOURTHCROWD Throngs Spend Day at Celebrations, on Motor Trips. Indianapolis residents turned out by thousands Monday, spending the Fourth of July in parks, on auto trips an<J at various places where celebrations were in progress. Roads leading to and froip the city were jammed with motorists from early morning until late at night. Riverside arid Broad Ripple Parks were crowded. About 30,000 persons witnessed the fireworks display which marked the opening of the thirty-two-acre Sarah T. Bolton Park. Celebrate at Hospitals At Highland Golf and Country Club, the second round of the T. B. Hatfield trophy match was played. Several tennis features and fireworks followed in the evening. Children at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children enjoyed a safe arid sane Fourth. Those who were able took part in the evening flrewarks display on the hospital la*wn while others watched the celebration. , . _ . An Indiana pageant was given bj the Camp Fire Girls at Cany? Alahi, near Noblesville. The girls also participated in a swimming meet. Many at Legion Festivities At the Sunnyside Tuberculosis Sanitarium a picnic attended by p - tients, friends and relatives was followed by fireworks display. Twenty thousand persons were a the celebration conducted by the Irvington Post of American Legion ah Ellenberger Park. Bickel, president of the United Press Associations, carried across the Atlantic by Lieut. Commander Richard E. Byrd in the America, was received Monday by Ralph D. Blumenfeld, editor of the London Daily Express. "N It was the first officially recognized air mail letter ever sent from New York to London. The stationary showed evidence of having been soaked in sea water. It bore the cancellation stamps of the New York, Ver-Sur-Mer and Paris postal service. CAUGHT BY CAR OWNER Alleged Auto Robber Held Under $2,000 Bond. Following an alleged attempt to start a parked automobile at Riverside Park Monday night, Ernest C. Smith, 612 E. Georgia St., was captured in the crowd and arrested on a charge of vagrancy and ordered held under $2,000 bond. The car belonged to Walter L. Parker, 3822 E. Thirtieth St. Smith was caught by Parker and his broth-er-in-law, Albert Scott, 1826 She Mon St., with the aid of the holiday ,'crowd. Smith denied attempting to steal "the car. He said'he was looking for . the car of a friend. An assorted bunch of automobile keys was found in his possession, police said. GIRL BURNED BY GAS
Escort Lit Cigaret While Filling Tank of Automobile. Pauline Elliott, 21, Negro, Chicago, received treatment at city hospital Monday night for burns received at a filling station, Fall Creek Blvd. and Northwestern. Ave. The girl was riding in an automobile driven by Clifford Parks, 530 W. Twenty-Sixth St. They drove * into the filling station for gas, and while the attendant was filling the tank Parks lit a cigaret. The gas tank exploded and the car was badly dairfaged. Neither Parks nor Del ton Roundtree, same address, to whom the car belonged, could be located by police. Parks left the scene, police say, when the flames started. TERROR WOMAN DIES FIGHTING \ Sophie ( and Two Aides Killed by Russian Police. By United Press MOSCOW, July s.—Sophie Zak-harchinko-Schultz, noted woman terrorist, died with her high-heeled shoes on in a desperate fight with Soviet secret service agents at Smolensk, 250 miles 'west-southwest of Moscow. With her were two male followers, Vosjnesengki ancj Opergut. All three were killed after wounding five secret service, agents who had orders to take them dead or alive. Iri an effoiS to escape, Sophie killed a chauffeur who refused to help her. Unable, after that, to get away, the three terrorists turned, at bay, and fought until they were 'killed. Sophie had come under police notice when she, Voynesenski and Opergut attempted to bomb secret service headquarters in the Lubianka Prison. It was declared the trio were nonarchists who had come to Russia from Finland.

IRON MINES MAY HAVE UPSET BYRD’S COMPASS Bii United Press PARIS, July 5.—A theory that the iron mines in the vicinity of Caen, France, may have affected Commander Bryd’s compass is advanced by M. Bleriot, pioneer flier of the English channel. Byrd agreed that such a thing migrit have been possible and recalled that Lindbergh told him that he experienced some difficulty with his compass in a similar locality.
