' Fifteen women convicted of Federal offenses have been taken from behind the iron bars of State and county jails and ase now working and sleeping at Alderson, W. Virginia, behind mosquito bar. Within a vear or two 500 women will be there. The Federal Industrial Institution Women is the first of its kind. A number of States have esseparate prisons and re■nrien for women, but Federal have been put wherever Hbould be found for them. In the 13 yfars since then, Dr. Harris has never returned to teaching and writing. Now her whole interest is centered on making useful citizens of woman prisoners at Alderson. Sixty per cent of these have violated Federal narcotic law, which means that in most cases they are drug users themselves and must be cured of the habit. Others have tampered with the mails, forged pension claims or money orders, or_ violated the prohibition or Mann acts. Learn Housekeeping . At Alderson they will be taught industrial sewing and knitting, laundering and canning, cooking farming, poultry raising and nursin. They will have educational opportunities if they desire, and athletics and music for leisure hours. The institution is only about half complete. Necessary funds were held up by failure of the deficiency bill. But a start has been made and Dr. Harris is well pleased with results so far. The first fifteen prisoners will establish a tradition for orderliness and good behavior which future inmates will follow, she hopes.

‘Pop’ Judell Boasts Record for Faithfulness Among Nation’s Traveling Men. Bv United Press SAN FRANCISCO, -July I. Veteran of more than a half-century on the road, H. L. (Pop) Judell, 83, has traveled more than a million miles, largely by horse and buggy, and sold 600,000,000 cigars to dealers throughout the country. Judell is one of the nation’s best known “drummers” and national chaplain of the United Commercial Travelers. He has disposed of 12,000,000 boxes of cigars. “In these days of stupendous figures perhaps that record will not impress anyone as being out of the ordinary,” said Judell. tion last century,” he said. “The horse and buggy was the thing to make all small towns situated close enough together, with occasionally a row-boat ride across a river to avoid a big detour. “Horseback wasn’t so bad, but joggling on a mule for several hours would make a tombstone seem like a soft cushion.” Snowshoeing from one town to another in the 80’s was a regular event, but the storekeepers of mountain hamlets knew that, rain or snow, “Pop” would “be along any day now.” Judell recalled how he invariably carried some part of his fare, so that he would not starve if marooned en route. He often slept by the roadside. The cigars Judell sold, he figures, Yvould last 1,000,000 men 83 days in continuous smoking. Ten men would need to work 656 years to manufacture the 600,000,000 cigars. Shoes that retail at $12.15 a pair in Australia, leading cattle country, may be bought for $5.80 in London or $7.80 in the United States.
