Co-Ed Refuses to Believe Guilt of Gangster Lover, Sentenced to Die
Loyal to Man Convicted of Slaying World War Veteran. By NBA Service ELMIRA, N. Y., July I.—“To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” This is the simple answer of pretty Lucille Davis to all who ask why she gave up friends, her educational opportunities, and possibly her career to stand by an alleged underworld gunman, Charles Doran, now in the death house at Sing Sing. Doran was convicted at Albany, N. Y., of the murder of an unarmed storekeeper—a World War veteran in ill health. “Love means loyalty,” said Miss

Davis, who has just passed her twentieth birthday. “Love means devotion, love means giving the best one has. I learned what love meant while in my mother’s arms, and who ever heard of a real parent deserting a child in trouble? All love is essentially the same. “.I will stick to Charles to the very edge of the grave, and look for him in the hereafter.” Lucille Davis is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Davis of Erin, a rural village but a few miles from Elmira. She attended the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, N. Y. Quiet, unassuming, she won the love of teachers and students alike and was supposed to be entirely free of all affairs of the heart. Only her room-mate knew she had a sweetheart whom she had met quite by accident and to whom she was de-

votedly attached. Miss Davis expected to be graduated with her class and then enter the teaching profession until the engagement ring upon her finger was joined by a wedding ring. Months ago Albany was startled by the brutal murder of a World War veteran who had opened a small store to support himself. Police searched in vain until a gangster was arrested on another charge and said Charles Doran had killed the veteran. Doran, protesting his innocence, was taken into custody. When Miss Davis heard of the arrest she rushed to the jail and demanded to see him, declaring he was at the theater with her the night of the crime. Doran went to trial, ably defended, and with Lucille at his side. She admitted frankly she was unaware he was a recognized gang leader, but it made no difference anyway, as he was innocent of the crime charged. Going on the witness stand the school-girl testified Doran was with her the night of the crime, that he had never been guilty of a questionable act since he had known her, that she regarded him as clean and manly. But the jurymen said: “Guilty as charged in the indictment.” With tears streaming down her cheeks the girl threw herself into Doran’s arms and cried over and over again that she would desert him. When Doran was removed to the death house in Sing Sing Miss Davis returned home to her parents to await the result of the appeal taken in his case, issuing a carefully penned statement in which she said: “I do not believe his conviction can stand. My faith in God is too great for that. “Whatever ill may come I have been true to myself, to my parents, to God, and to Charles and I am content to await the unfolding of the future.”

MiniVES COMRADES Civil War Veteran, 91, Dislikes Offers of Lifts. Bit United Press MONTICELLO, Wis., July 1. Eighty-one years ago Oscar Babler left his quaint little home in the Swiss mountains for anew world. Now, at 91, he reads the old roil call of his Civil War unit, but there are no replies. Babler is the last of his command. He can “walk as well as he ever could,” he stoutly maintains when offered lifts wherever he goes. “They won’t let me go fishing alone any more, either,” he complains. “Think I’ll fall in. Hump! All they want me to do is tend garden. I went out hunting potato bugs and found six. No fun in that."
‘Mopupus’ Job Hurts Dignity of Offenders
Bu United Press CHICAGO, July 1. Charles Huff and Gail Haines were arrested for intoxication and asked why they never worked. "Your honor,” they told Judge John Sbarbaro, “we can not find work suitable to us. We would not stoop to manual labor.” The judge looked them over and replied: “How would you like to be executives of the ‘mopupus’ division of this courtroom?” They both agreed willingly. They were given brooms and mops to clean up the room and went to work crestfallen. Movie Riches Made, Lost at Forlorn Hope Corner
BY GEORGE BEALE United Press Staff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, Cal., July I. Hollywood’s glittering promenade is so magnificent that many spectators and paraders forget the starting point—the Corner of Forlorn Hopes. What the barret means to poetry and the poolroom to the underworld —the Corner of Forlorn Hopes is to the cinema. It is alive with genius, silliness, talent, conceit and despair. Geographically, it is located at the corner of Gower St. and Sunset Blvd. The bus bench on the corner has been labeled “Mourners’ Bench” by some unknown wag. The Corner of Forlorn Hopes is the center of “Poverty Row,”' the group of small, independent studios which turn out only “quickies.” In movie jargon “quickies” are pictures made cheaply, which means swiftly. The “quickie” producers buy lengths of “stock” shots from news CLUB DEDICATION SET Dinner Dance Saturday In New Richmond Building Bu / nilrd Press RICHMOND.
