IDEA OF RACE HAS NO PLACE, DARROWAVERS 'Owes Debt to Negro, Chicago Jurist Tells Convention. “The idea of race has been fostered by people thinking that they are better than someone else. It can have no standing in any theory of origins, whether bibilical or evolutionary.’’ “America owes a great debt to the Negro, who was forced to come here and then made to work for nothing.’’ “If Christians are going to the tame heaven, regardless of color, why not practice a little of that here.” “Negroes are obtaining more money and education, and these things mean power. It is up to you to advance your own cause and not depend upon any white friends.” 8,000 Hear Him Thus, for nearly two hours Sun-' day, Clarence Darrow, Chicago lawyer and student of social forces, adcised and exhorted more than 8.000 persons attending the convention of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People at Cadle tabernacle. Long an observer at similar gatherings, Darrow pointed out that earmarks of improvement brought about by money and education were plainly visible. “It would be a poor Negro that >could not pass the educational test for the Ku-Klux Klan.” he concluded. “Eventually intellectuality will win out, so develop it.” Sessions Kesume Today Poet James Weldon Johnson, secretary of the Association, also spoke. Isadore Martin, Philadelphia, presided. “This organization is no subversive movement, but a fight for upholding of democratic American ideals,” Johnson said. He told of strides that had been made to put down lynching and to defeat unconstitutional segregation ordinances, citing the ordinance passed by the Indianapolis city council as a case in point. Business sessions of the convention were resumed today, and an- | other mass meeting is scheduled for the tabernacle tonight. William i Pickens, New York, will be principal j speaker. Home Burns; Family at Show Defective wiring is blamed for fire loss of SBOO at the home of Mrs. Anna Seils, 2413 Adams St., Sunday night. Mrs. Seils and family were at a theater when the fire' broke out, and it had gained some headway before neighbors discovered it.
