COUNTY DADS BALKONROAD, BRIDGEPLANS Kill Ordinance Providing for $1,078,000 Highway Improvements. County council today killed an ordinance providing for $1,078,000 worth of road improvements in the county and balked on a measure to appropriate $125,000 for Morris St. White River bridge, a part of the flood prevention program. Killing of the ordinance for improving seven roads means that the county will do no extensive road improvement for at least a year. The flood prevention sum is the county’s part of the $285,000 proposed bridge repair and channel widening for one mile and a quarter. The ordinance will be considered again Friday. Councilman John Shearer opened the flood prevention clash by asking Frank Cones, council and board oi works member, why the concrete for bridge repair was to cost sl7 a yard. Cost Declared Excessive “Figuring this out shows the cost will be sl7 a yard for concrete when the stuff is selling for $9 to $lO a yard and the engineer estimated it would cost $12.50 a yard,” Shearer declared. “The trouble is there are too many rubber stamps being used at city hall and no one knows what is going on,” Paul Dunn charged. It is believed the bridge request will be fought by the majority faction Saturday. Council President George Montgomery objected to County Auditor Dunn submitting the legislation for the seven roads all in one ordinance. If they were listed separately council could approve the important ones and reject the others, he said. The proposed total expenditure was too large in view of the $6,000000 which must refunded on illegally collected taxes, he said. Ordinances seeking $325,000 to pay current debts of the county until fall tax collection; to borrow $50,000 from the school fund to pay debts accrued in the free gravel road fund and to obtain $15,000 to pay expenses in the political corruption probe wereread and will be acted on Saturday. Ten thousand dollars was sliced from the $65,000 requested appropriation for remodeling the Courthouse. , PLAN IVES FOUNDATION Alfred M. Glossbrenner on Committee Raising $50,000 Fund. Alfred M. Glossbrenner, president of the Levey Printing Company and director of the Employing Printers’ Association of America is a member of a nations* committee which is seeking to raise a $50,000 fund to establish the Ives Foundation as a tribute to Frederick E. Ives inventor of the half-tone process by which ffhotographs are reproduced in newspapers and magazines. Although he made possible use of pictures in newspapers and magazines, Ives never benefited financially from his invention. The income from the fund will go to Ives during his life and after his death will be Used to found a chair in photo-engraving at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sheaffer Unearthing Corruption Evidence

Deputy Prosecutor’s Work Results in New Charge. More material evidence relating to alleged local political corruption gathered by Deputy Prosecutor William H. Sheaffer, became public today when an affidavit charging City Purchasing Agent John J. Collins with soliciting a bribe, was filed today in Criminal Court. ' Sheaffer has been working on the probe day and night since the matter came before a county grand jury last fall. He has been collecting evidence of various nature and is said to have been investigating activities in the purchasing department for a long period. Evidence on which charges of official misconduct and false pretense were filed against former City Market Master Earl S. Garrett Tuesday also was obtained by Sheaffer. Worked With Remy During the early part of the eight months’ investigation Sheaffer worked'with Prosecutor William H. Remy. and since May 6 he has been bringing evidence to Remy and Special Deputy Prosecutors John W. Holtzman and Emsley W. Johnson. To Sheaffer also goes the credit for obtaining the statement of Claude Achey, 641 E. Thirty-Third St., former grand juror, that James E. Armitage, politician, attempted to bribe him. Armitage, brother of William H. Armitage, one-time city hall boss, is now appealing from the three months’ sentence and SSOO fine levied by Judge parties A. TRUDGES HOME. PULLING BUGGY Man Heads For Kentucky Towing Vehicle. Sam Hayes, 60, of New Bethel, is trudging the road toward Bowling Green, Ky., today, pulling a heavy buggy containing a dog, banjo, 22calibre rifle and two suit cases unless he had changed his mind. Thursday night Deputy Sheriffs Reagan and Bell found Hayes blocking a road near New Bethel, about ten miles southeast of Indianapolis, with his equippage. The dog was hiding under the wagon and Hayes couldn’t move it for fear of crushing the canine. They helped him move buggy and dog off the road. Unless someone offers him a horse cheap he’s going to pull the buggy all the way to the Kentucky city he told them. Until last Saturday, Hayes said, he was the champion tomato picker of that vicinity. But he yearned for a change of scenery so bought the buggy for sl, loaded up and started for Shelbyville. He couldn't get work there so returned to New Bethel for a last goodby before heading south, he said. INDICTS 31 IN CITY Federal Grand Jury Charges Eighty in State.
