Does Our City Belong to Designing Politicians or to the People?
You Must Answer This Question Tomorrow
TOMORROW Indi^n^ apolis hangs in the balance. Before the sun sets tomorrow, either Indianapolis will have gotten rid of her waste and inefficiency and will have cast out her spoilsmen—or Indianapolis still will have her neck under the yoke. Unquestionably,'the hour is at hand! No longer can we dodge, evade or side-step the issue. It’s up to us. Either we are ready to give ourselves permanently into the hands of those who have blackened the name of our city, or we are going to take the city out of their hands and restore it to the people, where it rightfully belongs. Indianapolis is notorious throughout the nation for'bad politics. Until now, we have looked upon this situation as just one of those things that could not be helped. But the remedy now is in our hands. IT IS THE BALLOT! It is your sacred duty to use it. The City Manager Plan works. Every one of the 364 cities now operating under it will tell you that it works—immeasurably better than the old system. In every city where it has been proposed, self-seeking politicians have fought it. That’s one big point in its favor. Such politicians fight it—because it takes the government out of their hands. It means that those who use our city government for selfish ends are done. Naturally the designing politicians fight the City Manager Plan. What else could you expect? The self-seeking politicians of Indianapolis, who have the reputation of being the most crafty in the country, will pull some fast stuff at the last minute.
