SEA DISASTERS HAVE AWAITED > MANY BIRDMEN Wungesser, Coli Apparently Must Be Added to List. f BY MINOTT SAUNDERS NEA Service Correspondent PARIS, June 18.—Ever since man first dreamed of flying, the sea has offered him the most formidable challenge. To the long list of those courageous navigators who accepted the challenge and lost, the names of the gallant Frenchmen, Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli, must apparently be added. It is only a matter of weeks since the Frenchmen were last seen winging away from the western coast of their native land, but it is thirty years sindfe the first hardy pilot, Andree, disappeared over the ocean and was never heard from again. Andree Starts Expedition Andree started on his disastrous expedition to the north pole in the summer of 1897. With two companions he dared to set off in a free balloon in the hope that he would drift across the top of the world. Men called him mad. Countless rumors followed the disappearance of Andree and his companions, but none was ever verified, and to this day nothing has been heard of them or seen of their flying craft. The sea claimed its first flying victims. Tries for $20,000 Prize Science developed the airplane, and then came the case of Cecil Grace. On December 20, 1910, this daring aviator, nephew of a onetime mayor of New York, made an attempt to win the DeForest prize of $20,000 for the longest flight from England into the continent during the day. He left the coast of England under excellent weather conditions and with every hope that he would soon be across the channel. About eight miles from land he was sighted, still going strong, by the keeper of the East Goodwin lightship. A fog soon gathered, but he was later seen proceeding well by the skipper of a fishing smack. The fog became more thick, and at nightfall there was no sign of him. Disappears in Fog In that fog Grace disappeared. He has never been heard from since. Not the slightest trace was ever found of his machine, although for many days searching parties scoured the sea. The fate of Albert Jewel is another riddle of the sea. On Oct. 31, 1913, he started from Hcmstead Plains, L. 1., to reach the starting point for the race around Manhattan Island. His route lay over Jamaica Bay, Brooklyn, Coney Island and then across the Narrows to Staten Island. He never arrived, and was never heard from. During the war many naval aviators went off on missions over the sea from which they never returned, but circumstances were then unusual. Since the war the outstanding mystery of flying over the sea is the fate of the Dixmude, the old German airship which was turned over to the French. A storm swept the Dixmude over the sea from the eastern coast of Africa and, although fragments of the ship were washed ashore, no trace of the 26 Frenchmen aboard was ever found. BILLIONS IN GROUND Gold in Vast Quantities Yet Held by California. Bn Timm SvcciaJ WASHINGTON, June 18.—California, scene of this country's first great gold rush and almost 80 years of continuous mining operations, still has more than ten billion dollars of known gold deposits for those who care to dig it or wash it out of the ground. This assertion, assigning to California known gold supplies more than twice as great as those at present in the bulging U. S. treasury valuts, is made by Arthur Gibson, mining engineer, in the current issue of the Mining Congress Journal. Gibson explains that he is not writing of gold that possibly might be found if every inch of California were uprooted from one end to the other and minutely explored, but gold deposits'at present known to exist. Since the gold rush of ’49 to 1925, California produced only $1,790,958,744, less than 20 percent of the amount which Gibson says still is theer to be taken out of the ground, largely through placer operations.
