Nation's Best Track Athletes Swing Into Action in N. C. A. A. Meet

Major League I Comment

Ray Morehart, young Yankee second baseman, hit a home run within the park in the seventh inning and ruined a close game between New York and Chicago. It was the third straight victory for the league leaders over the Sox. The score was 8-3. Chicago had a three-run advantage going into the sixth. In that frame New York annexed two runs. Then in the seventh four singles, a walk, Morehart’s homer and Ruth’s triple and feat of stealing home gave the Yankees six runs and the ball game. The Chicago Cubs won their seventh consecutive victory over Brooklyn—the third of the present season—3-2 as result of an eighth inning rally . While Fitzsimmons was, toying with the Pittsburgh Pirates, his mates on the New York Nationals were hammering the offerings of Bush, Yde and Cvengros to all sections of the park. The final count was 12-1 in favor of McGraw’s team. Roush hit a home run. Jess Haines was credited with his ninth victory of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated Boston, 6-1. With the count tied in the ninth, j •ghtstone tripled to score Wilis and the Phillies defeated Cincinnati, 6-5. The Philadelphia Athletics won their fourth straight game when they bounced two St. Louis pitchers for sixteen hits and a 9-3 victory. Walter Johnson was unable to hold the Cleveland Indians and the two men who succeeded him on the mound were not much better, Cleveland winning over Washington, 7-1. Detroit scored a 6-4 victory over the Bost n Red Sox. Fothergill was the ace of the Detroit attack, with a perfect day at bat. He ha* home run, a double, two singles and a sacrifice fly. MALONEY VS. TWO-MINUTE PROSPECT IN HARNESS EVENT SATURDAY Riley. Owned by Fred Cline, to Perform at Fairground— Races and Horse Show Features,

A 4-year-old pacer that is a candidate for two-minute honors this year is an attraction of uncommon caliber which will be presented in the matinee Saturday at the State fairground. This performer is Riley (3), 2:01?i, a son of Belwin, that was purchased last fall by Fred Cline of this city, and turned over to Sep Palin, the Indianapolis driver who has made rapid headway in recent years with both gaits. Riley is considered a two-minute prospect because his record mile was made after a season the first part of which looked anything but promising. In the free-for-all pace here Saturday he will have plenty of competition, because Norman Grattan has been a performer that within the last two years readily could race miles around 2:02 and 2:03, while Lillian K took the record for 3-year-old pacing fillies on a half-mile track, when she paced in 2:os’j last fall at Louisville. Besides these there is Princess Iroquois, one of the most sensational of the late part of 1926. Trophies will be presented to all winners in the show horse entertainment at the matinee and horse show at the State fair track Saturday. In Section 1, for three gaited horses ridden by boys Strawmeyer Bros, will offer the prize. In Section 2, which is for the same
