CLARK COUNTY FOREST PROVES VACATION LURE Cool Depths of State Reserve Fine to Idle Away Time. State and national forests always have lured thousands of vacationists to their cool depths. Clark County State forest, south of Indanapolis, on the Pigeon Roost route, is one of those forests that have proven especially popular. The Clark County forest contains 4.200 acres of heavily wooded land, much of which is secondgrowth hardwood. It is the largest wooded area in Indiana. While chiefly hardwood is found in the forest. on the knobs is to be found much Jersey scrub pine, the only native pine in southeastern Indiana. Original Pine Here, for twenty-one years, State botanists have conducted a series of investigations in the study of tree'--. The area is, for the most part, rough and unbroken, the greatest elevation, 1,010 feet, being reached on Grand View knob. Here a 40foot observation tower has been erected, where tourists may obtain a view comparable to anything in the eastern United States. A nursery to grow trees for planting in the forest and to supply trees at cost, to individual land owners who wish to reforest, was started in 1919. There are about 1,000,000 small seedlings in the nursery at this time. Open to Public The State forest is open to the public. It is of especial value to people interested in forestry and In the reforestration of cleared land.
