Britons Will Furnish Color
Pair Are Invading Favorites ™ to Capture Title at' Oakmont. PLAY CONSISTENT GOLF Each Boasts Brilliant Record in Competition. J BY JIMMY POWERS NEA Service Sports Writer OAKMONT COUNTRY CLUB, Pa., June 8. —American golfers have not cornered the market on color and temperament. Think of Ted Ray, the battle-worn veteran, and George Duncan, the Flying Scot, two of the British stars, who are in America for international honors and the national open. Ted Ray has one of the most brilliant golfing records in English history, and Duncan has a record of great playing that few veterans of the game can equal. When not a winner, Ray has crowded the winners. Among his notable triumphs he won the British open in 1912, and the American open in 1920. Three times did he win the northern section tournament, in 1906, 1909 and 1911. On nine occasions he represented England against Scotland. Second and fiird were his stations in the rench championships of 1910, 1911 and 1919. And remember that he tied for the American open championship in 1913 but lost in the playoff. Six Holes in One That’s not all. He has won the Tooting cup, the Hertfordshire championship several times, the Daily Mail tournament, which is equal to our P. G. A. championship, and various other tournaments, as well as making six holes in one. Now for George Duncan. There will be no preliminary gestures when George steps up to tee in the U. S. open hdre. A "fleeting glance down the fairway, a squint at the ball, and, without a second’s hesitation, the pellet will be soaring towards the flag. Delay would be fatal to a man of Duncan’s nervous tension. He must find quick relief for the energy tautly keyed for the immediate shot. If he doesn’t, the shot will be fluffed, that’s all. That is Duncan—he must release his explosive effort before some foreign element annoys him. Duncan’s nerves are not exactly a, detriment, nor does he have to fight them always as doss Leo Diegel. Duncan exemplifies the theory that temperament and genius go hand in hand. Meteoric Finals Instances of his meteoric finales were his 71 and 72 to win the Britopen in 1920; his 69 in the last Bund of that event in 1922 when he tried to overtake Walter Hagen; a fourth round of S3 to win the Daily Mail tournament the same year and a 63 when ho beat Abe Mitchell in the Gleneagies final. He is as consistent in British golfing circles as Bobby Jones is in American. From 1920 to 1924 it has been first, fifth, second, sixth, and sixth. He has yet to produce his true form in an American open, however. Surely you understand that there’s no American monopoly cn the two characteristics, color and temperament now. Ray and Duncan are both capable of leading the field at the end of 72 holes at Oakmont, and they’re here for that one purpose. Win or lose, they’ll let the world know they’re here. BUSINESS MEN ASSAIL FREE CONGRESS MAIL Weary of Carrying Local Because of Franked Matter. Bn United Press WASHINGTON, June B—Big business men are demanding that they no longer be required to pay the postage bills for congressmen who use their franking privilege to load the mails with speeches. The interest taken in the subject by the Chamber of Commerce probably will mean that the McKellar amendment to the postal rate bill, framed, but not passed last session, again will be added next session, when a postal rate bill is introduced. McKellar’s amendment provided that the Postoffice Department should make appropriate credit to the postal service for money which would have been received if the socalled franked mail had been paid for at the established rate. LIQUOR RAID SIX Quietly entering Columbus, Ind., Tuesday night, Federal agents arrested six men, including a night policeman, on charges of violation of the national prohibition laws. George W Kinney, the policeman, was arrested after agents purchased liquor from him, tendering marked money in payment, according to advices reaching the prohibition department here. Louis Cavanaugh, a bellboy in the Belviaere Hotel, and Harry Morriss, also were arrested. . The events of the night followed several days investigation by undercover agents. Massy and Robert Adams were the sole recipients of sweaters. NEW TRACK RECORD SET Happy Argo Breaks Five and OneHaif Furlong Mark at Belmont. Bn l nitrd Press NEW YORK. June B.—Happy Argo, 4-year-old bay, set anew track record at Belmont Park, Tuesday. Running in the fourth race, the colt finished the five and onehalf furlongs in 1:04 4-5, one-fifth of a second better than the record established last year by Ladine and Burd Helen. Jockey O’Donnell was up. Happy Argo is owned by the Kershaw stable. Major League Comment George Sisler, peerless first baseman of the St. £ouis Browns, stole three bases and hit safely in each of his four trips to the plate. The Browns, incidentally, lost the game to the Philadelphia Athletics, 11-9, although the Mackmen were outliit, 18-14. An eight-inning rally gave the Cubs the advantage that netted a 7-6 victory over Brooklyn. Previously Brooklyn had hammmered the offerings of Charley Root, Bob Osborne end Roy hard. Four home runs featured the first game of the important series between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox in which the Gothamites won, 4-1. The victory gave New York a little better than a two-game advantage over the second place Sox. Four singles, a base on balls and a home run in the second inning gave Washington six runs and paved the way for a 10-8 victory over Cleveland. Cleveland threatened several times, but the rallies were short lived. Grimes, Henry and Songer tried unsuccessfully to stop the heavy hitting of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pennsylvanians defeated the Giants, 9-6. The Braves touched three St. Louis pitchers for fourteen hits and had little difficulty in defeating the world champions. Jimmy Ring started for the Cardinals, but was taken out after six runs were scored in the fifth inning. Jake May kept the seven Philadelphia hits well scattered and Cincinnati defeated the Phillies, 5-1. Despite a ninth-inning rally which netted four runs, Detroit was defeated by Boston, 6-5. Up to the ninth inning Wiltse had held the Tigers to two hits. NO HITS, NO RUNS Bp United Press SCRANTON, Pa., June B—Just 27 men faced Pitcher Mattueni of the Connell A. VIEHMANN NOW m OWN FIRM The establishment of the new real estate firm, F. J. Viehmann Company, 142 N. Delaware St., in business in Indianapolis was one of the features in local real estate circles last week. The firm opened its office June 1 and already reports an encouraging development. The new firm is headed by Frank J. Viehmann, president, who was associated with Lorenz Schmidt and Sons, Inc., for sixteen years. The new firm is a member of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board. The firm handles general real estate business. It also engages in general building business, rentals and insurance. It plans to specialize in building moderately-priced houses, Viehmann explained. “We are exclusive sales agents for the Puritan Finance Company,” said Viehmann. “We have sold seven houses in the first seven days we have operated. FENCE SERVICE WILL BE GIVEN Complete fence service is offered by the Hoosier Fence Company, 1660 Astor St. Protection, privacy, beauty, pleasure and utility are considered by the company, according to N. E. Boyer, general manager. “We believe that the average person wants to own an attractive home and fence can do much to make a home more attractive, as many tests have shown conclusively,” he said. “You take the place where the fence has been permitted to rot away or sag down, posts leaning awry, or lacking proper bracing or painting, and it detracts from the looks of the place. A barren open space may be transformed into an attractive lawn or garden, making a most appropriate setting for a home, a real beauty spot, a true reflection of the home life and hospitality within. “The property that is well fenced always commands a better market price than the property that is unfenccd. Many persons have found that a fence is all that is needed to give that ‘well-kept’ look about their premises.” The company supplies fence for all purposes. Lawn and garden fence is supplied in wood, chain link, or ornamental woven wire, heavily galvanized and set with lasting Kentucky red cedar posts, painted any .olor. It also supplies fencing for tennis courts, poultry yards, dogkennels, flower bed borders, clubs, estates, farms, factories, cemeteries, orchards, parks and other places.
