RADIO NOW TRIES TO FIND NEWER (MUSICAIJENIUS Contest Launched to Discover Hidden, Young Talent. Bit United Press Radio has now entered as anew business the discovery of musical genius. Before the days of wireless, only royalty and men of fortune could foster the aspirations of youth that showed a tinge of the unusual in it. The first few years of radio broadcasting opened up this new field for the youngsters with musical talent. Now it reaches a peak, perhaps not yet the highest, with the offer of a national competition for the selection of ten singers who show best promises of success in music. It is made through organization of the Atwater Kent Foundation for the encouragement of musical genius. Tuition Fees. A. Atwater Kent, president of the foundation, expects to expend $250,000 in this nation-wide search for new Marion Talleys and Orville Harrolds, two prominent Metropolitan stars who Jumped to fame over night. Only $17,500 of this will pay for prizes, but the rest of the money will defray audition and traveling expenses, tuition fees in leading Conservatories and incidentals. W National Audition. The national radio audition is to start with a series of local, state and district selections from which five young men and five young women will be chosen for a final audition in New York. The radio public will have the opportunity of ..selecting the winners ! of the local auditions, in connection with chosen judges. But the final I audition in New York will be put j up for decision to a group of lead- | ing musical authorities and critics. Contestants must not be over 25. ] They must never have sung in a professional group. They must never have been a paid principal in any concert outside their own States. AFRAID OF RADIO POLE VILLAGERS RILL ITS OWNER Bu -V EA Service WARSAW, June 6.—The village of Sokoloff, in northern Poland, was a very lonely place for M. Savicki, school teacher. So he bought P radio to help along the dull eveings. Strange sounds came from the house of Saxicki after that. Sometimes passersby heard orchestral music, and they knew there was no orchestra there. “Must Be Witch” Sometimes they heard many voices, and they knew the school teacher was alone. There was only one conclusion; Savicki was a witch. Heavy rains came and damaged the crops. High winds leveled the grain left standing. Violent electrical storms shot out of the heavens. Radio Man Slain So the villagers armed themselves with hoes and axes, broke into Savicki’s house, smashed the “devil’s engine,” killed its owner. Then they prayed, and returned to their homes. The floods and winds have not come to Sokoloff again this spring. And peasants tell how they averted complete disaster by torturing the devil from the soul of a witch, who was disguised as a school teacher. ‘ETHER MURDER' TRIAUS BEGUN Bpr/ T inted Press w VALPARAISO, Ind., June 6. Walter A. Scholl, formerly of Indianapolis, went on trial before a jury in Porter Circuit Court today for the killing of his two children, Vivian 8, and Donald 6,' in Gary last March. A reported confession by Scholl to Chicago police shortly after his arrest said that he administered ether to the children because Vivian knew of his plan to commit suicide and begged that he take her and Donald with him. Scholl repudiated this confession and entered a plea of not guilty to two indictments charging with firstdegree murder. The Rev. Charles Scholl of Pittsburgh, a retired preacher, who pleaded unsuccessfully with his son to enter a plea of guilty, may be placed on the witness stand to testify about Scholl’s mentality. Scholl’s estranged wife, reported to be ready to marry a Chicagoan after the trial, also may be called. The repudiated confession said that Scholl, after killing the children, “lost his nerve” because he wanted to see Margaret, his wife, before he died.
