MINISTER HITS ? U. S. STAND IN [AMERICA Baptists in Convention Hear Citizen of Government Moves. Bu United Press CHICAGO, June I.—The American attitude towards Mexico and Nicaragua w&s criticised today by the Rev. Charles S. Detweiler of New York before the Northern Baptist Convention. . He urged a plea of sympathy towards the countries. In discussing the Mexican question the Rev. Detweiler said: “I admit that our State Department has made out a good case in insisting that no laws shall be of retroactive application, but at the same time I lament its apparent lack of sympathy with the social program of Mexico. “Our Government in threatening to lift the embargo on arms and thus make it possible the overthrow of Calles, has been like Saul, willing to sacrifice his idealistic son, Jonathan, to his abstract and legalistic ideas of righteousness. A lack of sympathy and failure to understand the LatinAmerican mind makes difficult the adjustment of differences between j nations.’’
Os Nicaragua he said: “Undoubtedly our State Department will discover a way out of the confusion and distress which it helped bring on the. country by backing the wrong man. We wanted to discourage revolutions and yet we recognize a government that came into power by revolution because it seemed to be the way out of a bad situation. An audience estimated at upwards of 10,000 was in the Coliseum at the morning session. Most of the day was spent in reports with none of the controversial issues up for discussion.

LONG EXPECTED LITTLE CUSTOM lORDAN IS HERE Car, Smaller and Lighter, Presented in Three , Styles. Charles G. Saunders Company announces that the first of the long, expected Little Custom Jordans has arrived and is on display at the company’s sales room, 10S3 N. Meridian St. * It is a distinctly new type of motor car—smaller and lighter in, weight than any car that Jordan has ever built. * Three styles are presented on a chassis compact and sturdy in construction. All bodies have been done by a group of custom designers. There is a five-passenger custom sedan, anew type of four-passenger inclosed car, called the Sport Salon, and an extremely smart collapsible couperoadster known as the Little Jordan Tomboy. Eleven Years The Jordan Motor Car Company lias devoted eleven years to the limited production of cars of the better class and is seeking leadership in the fine quality small car field while retaining the straight eight as the top of teh line. Jordan feels that there is a tremendous waiting market for a small car of really fine quality. The new Little Custom Jordan Is fully the equal in lines, finish and luxurious appointments of many of the famous European cars, although Jordan prefers to call it an American rather than a European type. The car is only sixty-nine inches high. The average adult standing on the curb can easily look over the top. Yet, there is ample room and comfor t for a six-footer inside. This is due largely to the adoption of the wormdrive axle which permits lower bodyconstruction without sacrificing head room or clearance. The new Little Jordan is said to be the lowest ear< on the road but without sacrificing an inch of clearance or aji inch of tread. The entirely new radiator of bright nickel is high and narrow, with a high hood and cowl. Fenders of a distinctively custom type flow in with the body lines and give an impression of greater length. Extra long chrome vanadium steel springs, together with Houdalle hydraulic shock absorbers and an unusually perfect balance, give a riding ease that is uncanny. Two Shades The sedan is finished in two shades j of Monte Carlo gray with fenders to match, and the window reveals a/ new shade of blue-green. Upholstery is in custom broadcloth with appointments of etejied silver. The instrument board is new in color, design, and arrangement. Botli the sedan and the sport salon have scarlet wire wheels of anew I type with ldrge hubs, and all at-1 taching bolt heads concealed but easily accessible. The Little Tomboy is done in a shade of Royal Pekin yellow, with Burbank top and ebony black wire wheels. Fenders are painted to match the Indy. A dickey seat in the rear deck is controlled by a spring, and can bq opened from the driving compartment. The Burbank top folds down easily if open air driving is preferred. DODGE REPORTS MORE PRODUCT! Second Following New Motor Announcement
Orders received by Dodge Brothers, Inc., from its dealers since announcement May 1 of the new four-cylinder motor have been in such volume that, production has been Increased for the second time in ten days, according to President E. G. Wilmer. “The immediate response of the public and of our dealers has been bery gratifying,” Mr. Wilmer said. “Orders received in the first three totalled approximately $4,000,000. This is in addition to ordinary construction allotments.' “The first day after the announcement dealers placed orders for 1,000 cars and on the second day orders totaled 1,742. Orders are continuing to pour into the factory in large volume. “Over six hundred telegrams from dealers in all sections of the country have beep received telling of quickened demand and allotments, advance shipment of thfir allotments. "Stocks of cars in dealers' hands are low and current retail sales will be immediately reflected in factory operations. Since March 1, deliveries by dealers have been materially in excess of factory production. “Output was stepped up May 9, to cars for the large orders. This was the second time our operations have been speeded up within ten days.”

The Tail Light By Swede Swanson
Nearly two million used automobiles were turned in last year on purchases of new r cars. Year by year this "replacement market” has been creeping up on the new-car market until it is beginning to be bigger than the market for brand new buyers. Auto dealers arc coming to recognize the importance of the used car in trades and resales. They used to pass on this question with a shrug and a grunt. Now they look at it with apprehension The situation was intensified last fall when high pressure salesmanship and loose financing conditions brought a high peak in sales of new cars, only to find many buyers unable to keep up their payments. Repossessed cars, those taken bark by the finance companies, had been greater than ever this year Asa result, the automobile industry Is beginning to get to its senses. New cars aren’t forced on people who can't afford to buy them. Used automobiles are being taken in on the basis of their true resale values The industry Is becoming more stabilized. And with it general trade conditions will become more stabilized. The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey has bought seventy-six of the new, fast-duty Buiekpowered. sixcylinder General Motors Trucks, it was reported today by V. G. Phillips, general sales manager of the General Motor Truck Company. Fifty-seven of these new trucks will be the new two-ton model T-50, for tank wagon use in New Jersey. The rest of the orders will be used throughout Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and North and South Carolina. Sixteen of the new units will be put in service at Charlotte, X. C., one at Charleston, S. C.. six at Baltimore. Md., four at Richmond, Va.. two at Norfolk, Va.. and five at Charleston. W. Va. Nineteen of the units will be the Mode! Federal Motor Truck Company announces that hereafter its advertise' ing program will be handled by Brooke, Smith & French, Inc., De troit, Mich. LOW SPEEDS DEADLY London Figures Show Fatalities Most at 5 to 10 Miles. LONDON. June I.—Tabulation of figures gathered by the London Safety First Council in the city’s metiypolitan area, shows that, the largest amount of fatnl accidents occur when automobiles are going only five to ten miles an hour. The fatal accident toll from 1920 to 1926. the survey shows, was 366 for cars going not more than 10 miles an hour, 36.49 per cent of the total. At speeds of more than 20 miles an hour, however, there were only 45 fatalities, or 4.49 per cent. Americanized Holland More than 63 per cent of the passenger cars, trucks and busses in Holland are of American manufacture. The principal competitor to America in that country is Germany. Millions for Roads Efforts are being made in Texas to have a $100,000,000 road fund taken up by the Legislature and approved by the voters.
shows, holding meetings with dealers organizations in the East and Middle West. April set anew sales record for the Oakland Motor Company., Pontiac, Mich.. 19.423 cars being sold during the month, it was announced by W. R. Tracy, vice president, in charge of sales. This exceeds the sales of last August, previous high mark of the company, when a total of 17,663 cars was sold. May production schedules have been increased again and the Oakland factories plan a combined output of 24.000 Oakland and Pontiac cars this month, on average of more than 1,000 each working day. The 1,000 cars a day goal was reached one day the last week in April, but this month the production will have to average about this record mark if thh schedule is to be maintained. Oakland is running far ahead of its 1926 sales, each month showing a big increase. During the first four months of 1927 Oakland-Vontiac sales totaled 53.618 cars, as against 39.309 cars for the same period last year. Production is still far behind orders, according to factocy officials and every effort is being made to increase production without interfering with careful inspection and the quality of cars built. •

CHEMISTS STUDY TO MAKE RUBBER IN LABORATORIES Illinois Science Head Looks to Petroleum to Supply Ingredient.
! Bit I vitnl Pre.'S I URBAXA, 111., June 1 —The future rubber supply may be a J synthetic product produced in chemical laboratories. Dr. Roger Adams, head of the University of Illinois chemistry department, looks to petroleum to supply the necessary ingredient for synthetic rubber. “Rubber has already been made synthetically," Dr. Adams says, "and the types of raw material necessary are well known. The serious problem is to find a source of this new material which is cheap enough to make possible competition of synthetic tubber with the natural. Petroleum offers a possibility. Found After Cracking “When the high-boiling petroleum is cracked, in order to obtain low-boiling fractions which can be used as gasoline in internal combustion engines, there are contained in these low fractions butadiene and Its derivatives, the type of compounds which have been shown to be convertible into synthetic rubber. “It remains for the scientist to find how the yield of these butadienes may be increased and how they hay be econrmically removed

from the closely related products which accompany them. Not Far Off “When this difficult problem Is solved, synthetic rubber will not be far off. Suppose that a 5 per cent yield of butadienes might be obtained by a proper cracking and extraction process. On this basi?. and assuming that the butadiene might be converted quantitatively into synthetic rubber (a goal which, to be sure, has not yet been reached), it would require the cracking of fifty-two million batrels of petroleum to provide the necessary butadienes for forming four billion pounds of rubber.” Safety Study Not Sure Mishap Cure Mayors of five leading American cities agree that highway safety education and legislation are not the perfect cures they were formerly thought. Some of the ideas advanced to cut down the mounting street accident toll are: Super-highways for motor travel with cross traffic passing beneath. Synchronized street signals with lights flashing “Go" progressively. Autos built all of steel like railway coaches. Safety features such as brakes.
