BUSINESS BOOMS AS YANKS RIDE •AMERICAN SNIPS Seized German Transports Being Put Into Use by Board. Bn Times Special WASHINGTON, June I.—Because Americans are beginning to patronize . home industry and travel to Europe under the Stars and Stripes, the Shipping Board is considering placing two more vessels in the transatlantic service. They will be the Agamemnon and the Mt. Vernon, former German liners, which served as transports during the war, but have been laid up since.. Naval architects and. ping Board officials now are preparing plans for the reconditioning of these ships. Three plans, varying from $2,500,000 to $6,000,000, are under consideration. i It will cast $3,000,000 to make the boats oil burners and convert them into passenger liners. The plan is to make them cabin boats, somewhat slower than the crack Leviathan and less expensive. The Shipping Board tiow is operating five ships across the Atlantic, three being so-called “cabin” boats. The entire fleet is booked to capacity J •til after Aug. 1, the Shipping aid says, and later in the year these boats will help move the American Legion to and from Paris. RUSSIANS’ GUZZLING ALARMING Merry Bowl Flowing Too Freely, Soviet Bosses Think. Bn t'nltrd Press MOSCOW, June I.—Soviet Russia has turned to local option in an effort to curb the growing vodka drinking. A decree just issued by the Council of People’s Commissars authorized total prohibition of intoxicating drinks except beer and light wine, whenever a majority meeting of residents of a town, village or district vote for it. Sale of strong drinks in cases or theaters and moving picture houses, as well as in workmen’s clubs and other cultural and social centers, has been entirely forbidden. tfut Down Drinks funicipal and district officials are authorized to forbid sale o£ strong drinks on holidays and on the eve of holidays whenever they think the prohibition desirable. Since the Soviet Union abandoned total national prohibition after several years of experiment, vodka of a strength of forty per cent was authorized. The death blow to national prohibition was given by the premier, Alexander Rykoff and the forty per cent vodka therefor is popularly known as Rykoffka in his honor. Consumption Mounts Consumption of vodka has been increasing greatly, the expenditure for the drink in the last two months of 1'926 and in January of this year reaching the sum of $100,000,000, almost exactly twice the amount spent in the same months a year ago. The quantity consumed increased 1n the same period by 18 per cent. U. S. GROWS RUBBER IN SHRUB FORM California Has 400-Acre Tract Devoted to £ Plant.

B'/ NEA Service SAN DIEGO, Cal.. June I.—Rub-ber-growing in the United States is more than a mere experiment. ; It’s an actuality here in Southern California, where a 400-acre tract of land is devoted to the production if rubber from two native American plants. Here the guayule shrub, found wild rn Texas and New Mexico and the desert milk weed are being cultivated for their rubber content. Secretary of Commerce Hoover sees the possibility of growing these plants in commercially profitable quantities. They won’t do for the production of the better types of rubber goods, which require highgrade crude rubber. Guayule yields from 7 to 20 per cent of rubber, which, however, is high in resin concent. Extraction of the resin is too costly to make the guayule rubber compete with the crude rubber imported. Carry Hubby’s Head LONDON —A deceased husband is not easily forgotten by a widow of the Isle or Andaman, off the coast of Africa. A lecturer here says he found that in Andaman, when a husband dies, the wife wears his skull on a chain for a year. When the year is up she throws away the skull and is open to new proposals. Penny to $3,250 YORK—One of the first edition copies of Fitzgerald's “Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam,” which sold for a penny apiece after their publication in London in 3 859, brought ’l3 .250 at a recent auction. The smallVst "copy of the book ever printed, t we-sixteenths of an inch square, brought $225.
