SCHOOL DOUBLES FARMER INCOMES, SURVEY REVEALS In 40 Years Educated Earn $20,000 More Than Others. Bv United Press' WASHINGTON, May 27.—Education la a necessity In modern farming, according to F. A. Merrill, of the Extension Service, Department of Agrioulture. "The value of an education to a farmer can now be discussed in dollars and oenta," Merrill said. "Survey* made in twelve states show conclusively that the years spent in high school and college are well paid for by Inoreased earning capacity when faxm activities are undertaken. "Even a common school education is distinctly more advantageous financially than no education at all,” he said. $9 School Days To illustrate this point Merrill said it was found in Texas that every day spent by a child in school might be considered worth SB. "This estimate was arrived at I fy taking $20,000 as the total earnings d£ an uneducated laborer ove ra 40year period and $40,000 as the total earnings of the high school graduate who had spent twelve years in school of approximately 180 days each in training,” he continued. The gain in wages, $20,000, was due to these 2,160 days of school, representing a value of $9.25 a day while the instruction lasted. "The annual net profits of Georgia farmers without any schooling were found to average $240 annually, while those who *had common school education earned $565.50; high school graduates $664.50; and those who had completed an agricultural college course earned $1,254. Educated Lead Those who had taken only a short course earned $895.95, or almost three times as much as those with no education at all. "In Indiana, Illinois, lowa and Kansas, the survey showed again that the men receiving the best training made the largest Incomes in both the owner and tenant groups. “In Missouri the better educated men own four-fifths of th)e land they operate, keep more live stock, handle more crops with each workman emplayed and do about one-fifth more business. Become Owners "An interesting fact brought out by the Wisconsin survey was that farmers with high school educations acquired the ownership of their farms in about seven years while it took ten years for those with only a common school education to acquire a clear title. “In New York State, among those in any given capital group, the high school graduates at any age were making more than the common school farmer several years older and with the same amount of invest, ed capital.” Merrill said the survey showed without exception that the man with the greater training enjoys the greater prosperity. The most -highly colored fruits grow in regions that have intensely bright sunlight.

STATE BOARD HAS HAT FEVER TIPS Prevent Misery, Sufferers Are Told. State Health Board today issued warnyng to all hay fever sufferers to consult their physician regarding preventive treatment. Statement on the subject was prepared by Dr. Walter W. Lee. It is in part as follows: "We are getting around to the time of tlie year when a certain number of individuals will be suffering from pollen sickness, commonly known as ‘hay fever.* Chief characteristics of this affection is its seasonal incidence, occuring at the time of year when the particular grass or weed is in bloom and its pollen is floating in the air. The disease manifests itself by Inflammation and itching of the eyes or mucous membrane of the nose, profuse secretation of tears, and a watery discharge from the nose. The head feels ‘stuffed up,’ sneezing may be distressing, nasal breathing is difficult or impossible. "Preventive treatment consists of

a series of some fifteen hypodermic injections of an extract of the specific pollen given at intervals of from three to four days or a week apart. Treatments should be started so that they will be complete before the pollen season begins. Chief offender in this State is rag weed, which pollenates about the middle of August.” Mexico last year issued a special pne-centavo stamp to raise money for a fund to fight grasshoppers. In Monaco an issue of a stamp celebrating the marriage of the daughter of the reigning prince paid expenses of the wedding.
