FUSSING CAUSES RURAL TEACHERS TO CHANGE JOBS Personal Quarrels With Trustees Heads List of Resignation ‘Whys.’ That personal quarrels between teachers and trustees is the cause of more teacher-turnover in one-room rural school sos the State than politics, is shown in a report of the Indiana Rural Education Survey committee submitted to the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Politics is next as a primary cause, while religious belief proved to be but a small factor. Statistics were compiled from a questionnaire sent out to 428 one-room school teachers. Questionnaire It asked “How many times during your teaching experience have you been compelled to seek new positions bcause of (1) your political party affiliations, (2) your religious beliefs, (3) your belief in a county unit for schools, "(4) your iparriage, (5) personal wish of the township trustee, (6) adverse recommendation of county superintendent?” Resulting were (1) 42, (2) S, (3) 3, (5) 82, (6) 6, making a total of 151 replies. The committee did not see fit to give the number of discharges because of marriage. It was estimated that thirty-five per cent of the teachers were discharged for unjustifiable reasons. The new teacher tenure law is designed to eliminate such discharges. Committee's Comment The committee commented as follows: “Thirty-five per cent of the teachers are going back to the same oneroom school next year. Another large group will teach some other one-room school. The combined groups making about 53 per cent.” .Median salary of township teach-
