MOTORISTS NEED FOIL AUTO THIEF Now His Busiest Season, Todd Stoops Points Out. Motorists should be aware that the present season is the automobile thief's busiest period awareness of this fact should stimulate them to take extra precautions to keep their cars from falling into his hands, says Todd Stoops, secretary-manager Hoosier Motor Club. With everyone using his car, creating the congested conditions under which the thief works most adroitly, it behooves the car owner to take advantage of the various locking devices on his automobile if he does nothing more. Stoops points out. Discourage Him "Locks may not always foil the thief, as many have pointed out, but they go a long way in discouraging him*" said Stoops. “If the thief finds a car securely locked as to ignition, gearset, door, or otherwise, he will not spend a great deal of time on it under ordinary circumstances. Instead, he will go in search of another. “The car owner should profit from the knowledge of the fact that more machines are taken by joy-riders than by professional thieyes. The thief may be an expert at picking locks and overcoming their effects, but the joy-rider is not. The temptation to take a car usually is quickly overcome if the joy-rider finds the task at all difficult. Careful Notes "The American Automobile Association, with which this club and others are affiliated, also urges, as a precaution against having one’s car stolen, that every automobile owner make careful note of the engine, serial and license numbers of the machine.
