UNITED STATES IN TENTH PEACE AS LITERATENATION Federation of Women’s Clubs Works for Change In 1930 Census. Bv United Prets WASHINGTON, May 20.—The United States is tenth in literacy among hations of the world, with nearly 5,000,000 adult illiterates, who confess they can neither read" nor write. In an effort to lessen this number before the 1930 census, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs is now making a nation survey of one county in each State to the end that illiterates may be taught to read and write before the census. Pupil Aids Drive After trying all the sources from which information in regard to lllterates might, logically be expected,” said Mrs. Elizabeth C. Morriss, director of schools in Buncombe County, N.
