NEW ENGLAND IN HOPES BAD TIMES THEREAT CLOSE Optimism Prevails in Northi east Following Long Depression. Su Time* Svt'iel BOSTON, Mass., May 20. —TC optimism is a reliable symptom of returning prosperity, New EnglanS Is on the way to recovery from the industrial illness which has plagued it during recent years. Almost everywhere, from the office of Governor Alvan T. Fuller, to textile sales offices, there’s confidence that New England is coming back industrially. f Much of this confidence seems to be based on anew and apparently more or less magic idea which has crept into the minds of business men hereabouts. _• Tho idea Is that of industrial Bmatui^ty.” Governor Fuller, former .automobile distributor, explained the idea by using a human life analogy. -“There’s a time when a boy's voice ohanges, when he finds he is growing up, and must use his head instead of rough and tumble tactics in getting ahead —when he has readied maturity. “Grown Up” Now “New England,” he said, “has Reached that period industrially. Instead of attempting to compete with the rest of the country in prices (charged for standard products, we must use our superior industrial Skill, our ability to make beautiful designs and styles which will put our products in a class by themselves. We’re beginning to see that pretty clearly, and it means that we will get out of the woods industrially.” This idea that New England industries must look for prosperity through superior headwork, instead Os by dragging labor and production standards down, is taking hold generally. In the last legislature certain of the textile interests sought to break down the 48-hour week for women by proposing a substitute which Would allow 54 hours of work a week if there were not an average of more than 48 hours a week for a yearly period. The principal argument was based on the necessity of meeting the competition of low wage and longhour southern mills. Attempt Fails The measure was overwhelmingly defeated in the legislature, and many leaders in the textile industry believe that it will prove about the last assault by organized textile interests on the relativitely high labor standards for which Massachusetts has long been famous. The reason assigned is that the textile leaders are becoming conof the industrial maturity PHJctnd accepting the fact that they must get in a class by themselves In quality and design instead of trying to beat down their labor costs to compete effectively with other sections on low grade goods. No one here denies that New England has a long uphill fight ahead to regain the same degree of industrial prosperity which marked the period during and immediately after the World War. [ 85 Per Cent Working I According to the Massachusetts department of Labor and Industries bnly about 85 per cent as many wage earners are employed in marmfacturing as were during the period 1919-23. In the shoe industry the dumber is less than two-thirds of the earlier average, and in cotton goods kbout three-fourths. The trend of employment, according to the department, has been down rather ■than up during the year. But' recently, most of the Massabhusetts Industrial leaders, according to the general consensus of opinion, have quit wearing themselves but by retelling the same old tale of |woe and have taken careful stock of •their situation. This has led to the Industrial maturity Idea. And this, there Is a {Widespread belief, suggests a way Iput of Massachusetts’ Industrial difficulties. 1 Claimed to be the only one in existence, a complete suit of chain mail has been made by a Nottingham {England) man. TIILE INSURANCE NEED EXPLAINED —■”= 1Title Insurance has been defined ars “an agreement whereby the insurer for a valuable consideration agrees to indemnify the assured in a specific amount against loss through defects of title to real estate, wherein the latter has an interest eithdr as purchaser or otherwise.” It is in no sense a matter of guesswork, nor is it a gamble. Titles are passed only after careful consideration by trained examiners and no responsible company wUI insure a title which is patently bad. However, the examiner for the insurance company can take into consideration many things extraneous to the record and can waive a great number of the technical objections which are properly raised by a careful attorney in the majority of titles. Title insurance offers unquestioedn Title insurance offers unquestioned security, as well as a great saving of time in deals involving real estate, and renders land and asset as easily convertible as stocks or bonds. It protects purchaser, mortagee, realtor, lawyers—everyone interested In the transaction, all at a small premium payable only once. The opinion and judgment of the lawyer are backed by all the resources of a responsible company. The real estate man is benefited by the gain in time and elimination of the probability of loss of his commission through objections to the title. All have the assurance that they cannot lose through any such defects.

PLUMBING STORE CASU-AND-CARRY Many home owners have looked for years for a store where they could buy plumbing supplies on the same basis as they buy groceries, but many plumbers have refused to sell supplies without Installing them. To meet this demand, W. F. Bryan, proprietor Service Plumbing Company, 1819 College Ave., has established a plumbing shop where practically all types of plumbing supplies are available at reasonable, retail prices. He maintains a complete 'plumbing shop and Is prepared to do all types of plumbing work. Bryan Is an experienced plumber and plumbing supply man. He has studied the requirements of the plumbing business for more than a third of a century. In the establishment of his new shop, which was opened Nov. 10, he has attempted to incorporate some of the things that a community needs in the nature of plumbing service, he said. “For years many persons who are handy with tools, the handy-man of the house type of home owner, who wanted to go into a store and buy a faucet, for instance, has had difficulty of finding a place where he could obtain such a thing, for the average plumbing shop owner insisted on installing it, and if he sold a faucet charged a price which was approximately one-half of the cost of installation,” said Bryan. “We havq anew plumbing shop program. We carry a large line of goods and we Invite persons to come in, look over our elaborate display of plumbing supplies, and we will sell any type of plumbing supplies. If it is something that! the plumbing code requires a licenced plumber to install, we will tel Lour customer and he can get a plumber to install it and pass the required plumbing inspection tests with it.” __ Bryan has an attractive shop. Assisted by his wife, he has arranged a number of splendid Window displays. Bryan is a member of the Master Plumbers’ Association, both national and State divisions.

CIVIC MAN IN GARAGEBUSINESS “It pays to patronize home industries.” This civic slogan Is borne out by the splendid service offered by the F. M. Bachman Lumber Company, 1601 Madison Ave.. one of the oldest and best-established concerns of-the city. m For forty-three years the company has served tho lumber demands pf the city. English Type Pleases

By Nora Kay As the finest work Os a builder who has established a reputation for fine work, the new Englisli. type of residence at 5110 £[. Meridian St., will interest prospective Indianapolis home owners. In design and construction it is a typical example of the careful construction and artistic design that characterizes all of the houses built by 11. L. Simons, but in the lavish beauty of the interior and the completeness of every detail of construction, it is outstanding even among Simons-built residences. At the first glimpse of the house, as it stands far back from the street on a lawn planted with carefully selected evergreens, one is aware of a dignity, a durability, a fine regard for the combinatilh of artistic the practical. While it follows the English manorial design in architectural details, it embodies the luxuries of the American home. Archway, Fountain The stone-edged doorway In the center of the front opens from a tile-floored terrace that extends across the front of the house into an entrance hall floored in black and white marble. At the east side of this entrance hall is a wide archway, and back of the archway the hall joins a barrel-ceilinged, many-win-dowed cross-hallway that extends the full width of the house. At the north end of this cross hall is a door that leads into a tile-floored breakfast room joining the dining room and the kitchen.- At the south end an archway reveals the living room and on the west side there are three French doors that open onto a tile-paved courtyard enclosed on three sides by the exterior walls of the house and forming an out-of-doors living room, where a fountain splashes from a wrought-iron rose int<* a great basin built above the north wall.

well-established business principles of fair dealing have enabled the company to grow from year to year. The modern demand for garages to house various types of automobiles caused the company to undertake the marketing of them, manufactured in the company’s mills. With five acres of space available, tho company expanded its sawmill and planing mill facilities to maintain a large, steadily-employed force of are kept busy on the parts of ihe garage. The garage made and sold by the company are of the permanent type, and not “shipped,” portable types. The company does not attempt to turn out "quantity production” at the sacrifice of "quality production,” according to Fred Bachman, president of the company. All of the garages sold are high-grade, wellfinished products of expert workmanship in every detail. Thp company makes and erects the garage for those who desire them completely equipped. The garages come in one. two and three-car sizes, and they are especially roomy.

IMPERVIOUS ROOF NOW IS POSSIBLE Practical tests have shown /conclusively that home-owners need not look on re-roofing any longer as an expensive, slow and inconvenient process, for modern methods of reroofing have eliminated these objectionable features. The General Asbestos Supply Company, 426 S. Meridian St., agents and distributors of the Jolms-Manville Corporation roofing products, which are largest makers of asbestos roofing and insulation in the country, has demonstrated this pften this spring. Workmen of the company do not find it necessary to rip off old shingles and litter up the premises with the remains. The General Asbestor Supply Company handles the Johns-Manvillo asbestos shingles, made of asbestos fibre —the silky strands of rock which geologists report is millions of years old. The asbestos has been seasoned and tempered by volcanic i fires and changes of the earth; it Is waterproof, fireproof nnd indestructable. The asbestos fibres combined with Portland cement under a terrific hydraulic pressure are formed into shingles which are literally slabs of stone. * Such shingles once placed on r roof, preclude tho necessity of reroofing again, Alfred Voight, manager of the company, phinted uot.
