LEPER HOSPITAL .ESCAPES MENACE OF RISjNG RIVER Institution One of Leading Bulwarks Against Dread Disease. Times Washinpton Bureau. 1322 New York Avenue WASHINGTON, May 20.—The Mississippi flood has spared one of Uncle Sam’s foremost agencies of mercy. The big hospital at Carville, La., where the Government is fighting leprosy, the most generally dreaded of all human scourges, is safe. Word has been received by the United State public health service that there is tno necessity for taking away the 800 patients, and that the work of earing for and curing them need not be Interrupted. Patients "Cured” Besides Improving the condition of nearly all of its patients, the hospital’s laboratory services make It a world outpost in the fight against the disease. Hospital authorities have reported several patients discharged as "cured” in the last two years, contrary tp. the general belief that all lepers are doomed to death. Contrary also _to general belief in its keadly contagion, no cases of leprosy ave yet been reported among any of the staff. The patients are not discharged as entirely "cured” because experience with cures has not been long enough to prove the impossibility of a recurrence of the disease. On "Social Parole” But patients are not allowed to go until rigid monthly examinations for a year have shown no trace of the disease, then they are released on "social parole.” The hospital’s treatments include the use of chaulmoogra oil, hailed as a cure for leprosy when it first came into use some years ago, radium, baths, radiant light, massage and exercise.
