In the Sugar Market
(By Thomson A McKinnon) NEW YORK. May 13.—Selling: increased in sugar futures today and the spot market in turn became unsettled. Although refiners have announced slight advances in ciuotaiions on granulated, it has been the disappointing demand in that quarter recently which has included laiger offerings of futures. Thus the circle has been completed. Wo regard theso conditions as temporary, however, because fundamentally the situation is sound. The backwardness of the season for increased sales of re--fined has brought some congestion of supplies. but this, we 'believe will be adjusted shortly. Cuban raws are regarded as in strong hands, and any improvements in demand here and abroad should prove helpful. The assurance of a more stable market for Javas was today a favorable development. We look for higher prices. / 1 RAW SUGAR PRICES _ High. Low. Close,. STOCKS SWING UPWARD; CALL MONEYHIGHER Rising Tendency on Ascendency Following Mornings Recessions.
Average Stock Prices
Average of twenty industrials Thursday was 167.06. off .52. Average of twenty rails was 132.91, off .47. Average of forty bonds was 97.60. off .18. Bu United Press NEW YORK, May 13.—Stocks swung upward in the afternoon trading following further recessions in the morning session on the New York Stock Exchange today. Call money firmed up to 414 per cent from the renewal rate of 4 >4, but even this failed to dampen the resumption of the advance. Harvester shares soared with International up more than 7 points and Case up 3. Baldwin rose more than 5 points; C. & 0., 3; Nickel Plate. 16; Houston Oil, 3; Pullman, 4, and Union Bag & Paper, 3. General Motors, and United States Steel also moved up sharply. Rising tendencies regained ascendancy on the stock exchange today, the principal movements almost wholly confined to the upside, resulting in substantial gains in various representative rails and industrials. Technical conditions appeared to have benefited from the recent reaction and the attempt by the bear crowd to extend this setback was without success. Perhaps the volume of dealings was curtailed somewhat by a weekend flurry in the call loan market, when the rate advanced.
